@Btexpress that is puzzling. I've tested HBO Max on both my Ultra 4800 and a Premiere 3920, and I get captions on both. All I can offer is that HBO seems to have terrible application programmers, as I have seen problems with their app on different platforms myself. Unfortunately, it's not confined to Roku devices.
This took place to me, restarted the app and then deleted and reinstalled it however the hassle nonetheless persevered. It wasn’t until I simply reminded back to the component I take into account that I left off on the night time before and wherein I knew the subtitles had been working and simply performed it from there.
I have Roku TV. trying to watch The Batman. No matter what I try captions don't work. The sugestions like restart the app and reboot in settings are not available in the settings.
@wireless_Mike unfortunately HBO has messed up the HBO Max channel again. Several other functions were broken in the latest update. You need to contact HBO for support for their channel. https://help.hbomax.com/us/ContactUs
It's a problem with the App itself on certain devices. All other Apps work fine. But HBO Max most of the time will not work at all and when they do they are not in sync. I have tried everything and nothing has worked.

For me, when I active the "Closed caption on" button it never stays on. Defaults back to off.
