I'm told by Spectrum that their streaming app supports number input from remote controls to change channels. Do current Roku devices that accept IR input from universal remotes pass input from the number and channel up/down buttons to the app? In other words, if I had a Roku Express or Ultra and a universal remote the was designed to work with Roku, would I be able to change channels in the Spectrum app with the number buttons?
Hello! @lenf67,

Generally speaking, yes, a universal remote will work on most (not sticks, as they do not have IR sensors). It will depend on the universal remote itself.

Hello, I see the answer was that universal remote works on most Roku devices - but can the number buttons and channel up/down buttons actually work to control the spectrum app to change channels by pressing "74" to get to channel 74?
I would love to know the answer to this as well. And if so, what "universal" remotes are compatible and which do you recommend?
I hate not having the option to press the channel number and navigate right to it. I do not like my Roku remote at all!
I only use Roku for my spectrum app
After speaking with a Spectrum rep there are currently no assurances that universal remote will be able to change the channels with the numbers while on the Spectrum app on your ROKU. They suggest using a Xumo streaming device with the Xumo remote which they can assure you has the capability to change channels numerically. This is because they own the Xumo device and charge you $5 a month to rent one for this service (as opposed to spending the one time $30 to buy a Roku device).
Cable companies still try to screw you.
Welcome, and thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, @Larrygiver!
We're grateful for the information you've shared here. We're glad you've directly coordinated this with Spectrum for further assistance as they independently manage and maintain their app on the Roku streaming platform.
