Remotely controlling grandparents' TV

I was wondering if the Roku app would work to change TV shows/movies on streaming services (like Netflix) remotely from another house, if already connected to the intended TV? My grandad has been having difficulty changing channels himself, and we thought that the Roku app may be an option.

    The device with the Roku app has to be connected to the same network as the Roku device, so it won't work remotely.  This question gets asked from time to time, but I don't know if there was ever a "simple" solution (or any solution for that matter).
