I worked for two days doing EVERYTHING To solve this problem; even bought a Roku Express, but had the same problem. I couldn't do a factory reset, as it kept looping back to opening. You can't get to settings on the ROKU screen, obviously.
As a last resort, I used a paper clip to press the reset on the receiver. Open up the clip and insert the pointy end in the tiny hole, hardly visible on the same side as the USB and HDMI openings. Hold for 5-10 seconds!
Voila! In business!
