Roku device recognizes WiFi, strong signal, but won’t connect. Any advice?

Hoping for some quick help - So the family and I just bought a Roku LE stick for the tv. Signal strength is very strong. I can stream any service I want on my cell phone at the same location as the stick. The Roku LE however, recognizes the WiFi networks, and when I go to connect it will go into a “Checking…” screen. There it will give a green checkmark next to wireless internet, and a green checkmark next to Internet connection, but then it just hangs for about 3-5 minutes. Eventually the device restarts, and goes right back to the wireless network selection screen.

I’m in a rental and have no means of checking the wifi itself.

Did we just waste $20 on this? Any suggestions on what I might be able to do to get it to work?

How are you powering the stick?  If you're using the TV's USB port, try using a USB power adapter/charger from a phone or tablet.
