Roku 4k data consumption question

Jump to solution

Does a Roku 4k, which supports HEVC codec, consume less data than a roku express on a 4k tv? If it does, it could be more worth the extra cost when you are hitting your data cap.

Re: Roku 4k data consumption question

Jump to solution

Hi @ashoklela,

Welcome to the Roku Community!

Regarding your question, yes, a Roku 4K device that supports the HEVC codec consumes less data than a Roku Express when streaming 4K content on a 4K TV.

The HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) codec is more efficient at compressing video data, allowing for lower bandwidth usage while maintaining high video quality.

You can try using the Bandwidth Saver feature, which will automatically halt streaming after four hours of inactivity on your Roku device. If you need help enabling it, feel free to follow the steps below:

  1. Press Home on your Roku remote
  2. Scroll and select Settings
  3. Select Network
  4. Select Bandwidth saver
  5. Choose On

Note: Some streaming channels employ their own mechanism to cease data usage after a specific period of inactivity. These features will not be affected when you disable Bandwidth Saver.

For more information, visit this Support link: How to use Bandwidth Saver to avoid exceeding your internet data cap.

In addition, make sure you press the Home button on your Roku remote when you are done streaming. This will return you to the Home screen and stop all streaming (data usage).

We hope this helps.

All the best,
Chel
