I have noticed a Roku hidden ssip shadowing my connected wifi channel. All indications are it coming from my Roku express... why?

Although basic Express models come with a simple infrared remote, they are also capable of being controlled by the Roku Voice Remote models which connect via wifi direct. I suspect you're seeing the wifi-direct channel the Voice Remote can use.
