We use captions often when watching videos with Roku Media Player. Sometimes actors speak very fast with very long sentences, and there's just not enough time to read the full caption before the next caption appears to replace it. In these cases, we pause the video to read the captions. However, doing this doesn't work well in Roku Media Player because pausing a video pops up the seek/progress bar with a large black background that covers the bottom of the screen and also removes the captions underneath it. The only way to see the captions is to wait a few seconds each time for the black background to disappear on its own, at which time the captions reappear. However, doing this every time is painful, especially during an extended conversation.
It would really improve captions if a combination of the following were implemented:
1) Display the seek/progress bar with a transparent background (instead of black), with the captions visible at the same time, when the video is paused.
2) Move the captions up above the black background so that they can still be seen when the video is paused. This is similar to how the Netflix channel moves captions upwards when paused.
3) Allow a button press on the remote to instantly hide the progress bar/black background so that you don't have to wait a few seconds to see the captions each time you pause.
