Program gets interrupted every two or three minutes.

Jump to solution

This morning, out of nowhere, after having no problems for the month I've had my Roku box; I have a very annoying problem. Every two or three minutes (regardless of what I watch) my program stops and the menu goes back to home screen. Has anyone else been experiencing this? And if so, how do I fix this?

Several possibilities come to mind:

RESTART YOUR ROKU
These things are just special purpose computers. Like their big brothers sometimes clearing things out by restarting them can correct problems.

Depending on your Roku model and Roku version number you'll find the "System restart" option under "Settings > System > Power" or if not there, under "Settings > System".

ROKU UPDATE
Roku is currently rolling out an update to its operating software from version 11.5 to 12.0.  A new release sometimes creates problems that must be addressed.  Roku menu path Settings > System > System update will show you your current Roku version number.  Down in the lower left corner of this screen it will also show you when your last update was installed.  Have you received version 12.0 and if so does your problem beginning coincide with your installation date?

POWERING YOUR ROKU
If you are powering your Roku by plugging into the USB port on the TV, try powering from house power via a USB power adapter
-- one may have been supplied with the Roku**.

The ports on many televisions only supply 0.5 amp or less, which is not enough to power a Roku reliably. It may appear to start up okay, but when it runs into something that requires more power than the tv's USB port can provide, something's got to give. Frequently this results in shutting down the stream you are viewing and exiting back to the Roku home screen.

If this is a new problem, possibly an update to either the Roku operating software or to some channel app software is using a little more power than in the past. If you were just barely scraping by before, this might push you over the edge.

**If your Roku didn't come with an adapter, or if you don't have a Roku adapter handy, any other USB power adapter you have from another device should work as long as the fine print on it says it outputs at least 1 amp.

After turning it off and back on, the problem stopped. I will keep the system restart option in mind, in case it happens again. Thank you.

Am having the same problem, sometimes in Roku and frequently in Pluto TV. The intervals start at every 30 minutes and progressively get shorter and shorter; am currently being thrown out of Pluto’s Sitcom channel every 2 minutes! No problem getting back in to the channel, but like clockwork, I get kicked out to the main Apps screen every two minutes.
