Solving playback issues

The stick has been plugged into the same HDMI port on our 65" flatscreen for at least 3-4 years. The "overheating" message popped up so we disconnected the stick, which was warm to the touch. What could be causing this?

We noticed that you're dealing with an overheating issue with your Roku device, and we're here to help.

If your Roku streaming player is kept in a closed space, especially with other electronics, it can overheat. Here are some troubleshooting steps to follow:

1. Carefully unplug the power cable from your Roku player and allow it to cool down.
2. Find a cooler spot for your Roku player and avoid placing it:
   - Inside a cabinet or closed space
   - On top of other electronic devices like cable boxes, routers, or receivers
   - In direct sunlight
3. Wait for your Roku player to cool down for at least 10 minutes. Once it's cooled, plug the power cable back in and wait for the Roku player to turn on. If you still see the overheating message or the Roku player shows a solid red light, immediately unplug the power cable.
4. Repeat step 3 one more time.

If the problem persists, you can try installing a free HDMI extender to help move it away from the back of your TV.

1. On the television in our family room, it seems every time we use it for an hour or so we get the dreaded overheating message. The Roku hangs from the back of the television just as the others in the home do (we have 5 of them). No other items with possible exception of the DirecTV unit positioned several inches below it. Surely the DirecTV unit can’t be putting out that much heat?!?

I have a Firestick connected to my Roku TV.

I solved the overheating problem by lowering the resolution on the Firestick. 

So instead of 4k, I would lower it to 1080 or 720. 

This worked for me and I hope it helps someone else with the same issue.
