Roku Ultra causes HDMI-CEC issue

Jump to solution

Im not so sure about that.  I have a Samsung QN90 TV and a fiber optic cable running directly out of my Denon AVR X7200WA with all my other devices plugged into my AVR for input source switching.  I am using an MX990 remote to control everything (Yes, it is the perfect remote now that Harmony got out of the business).  So for about a year everything has been working just perfectly when yesterday my ROKU Ultra, which is plugged into my AVR's "Media Player" HDMI port, "grabbed control" of the input source switching and won't let it switch to any other input source UNTIL I unplugged the Roku Ultra from the AVR's MEDIA PLAYER port when input source switching worked normally.  I plugged back in the ROKU and then my input source stayed LOCKED on Media Player port.

@bracer if you are using optical between your TV and AVR, you cannot get all possible supported audio codecs from your Roku if the Roku is connected directly to the TV. Optical will not pass anything higher than standard 5.1 Dolby Digital. It won't pass DD+, and core DTS is a maybe. It will likely not pass multichannel AAC/PCM which some streaming sites use.

There's only two ways to ensure you get every audio codec supported by a Roku player sent to your AVR for proper decoding. The first is to use HDMI-ARC, which sends all audio from your TV back over the HDMI cable. Your TV supports eARC, which is even more capable, and can send true lossless audio from a device connected to your TV back to your AVR. However, your AVR only appears to support the basic ARC, which is enough for every codec the Roku supports.

The only other method, and the preferred option, is to connect all HDMI devices directly to the AVR, and let the AVR send the video to the TV. This allows the AVR to process every audio codec it supports without the TV interfering with the signal. Virtually all AVRs will send the video through without any processing, so there's nothing lost by using the AVR as your video switcher.

Re: Roku Ultra causes HDMI-CEC issue - FIXED

Jump to solution

Ok folks my issue was fixed and I am enjoying ROKU once again.  My Setup is a Samsung 75" NEO QLED being fed by a Denon X7200Wa.  Every thing was working great for a year or so and then I could not switch input sources on my Denon Receiver (I bought the receiver in early 2015 so it was 8 years old).  I could not change the input sources either by the remote or manually turning the input source knob on the front of the Denon.  Some in this community speculated that it was some kind of firmware update on the Roku Ultra and after an hour or so on ROKU chat support and nothing was fixed  They had me reset the ROKU an it worked for about 10 minutes and then I could not x7200Wa with 9 year old technology was most likely the issue so I bought a new Denon Receiver (Denon X3800H because "maybe newer technology would solve my issue.  So I tried setting up the new receiver and I was unable to view Denon's OSD of their menu.  I needed to make some settings and update the firmware but try as I might, I could NOT get the new Denon's OSD (On Screen Display)Menu to come up on the TV screen - only the Samsung menu would display and it's purpose was how to plug it into the Samsung TV which was useless to me at that point.  So I called Samsung Tech support and they could not understand why I needed the denon menu.  After an hour the tech said "You know, the Denon receiver products are NOT compatible with Samsung.  I asked why he was  blowing smoke up my rear end and that it was ridiculous to suggest that their engineers would design a TV that was incompatible with Denon Products.  I hung up and called Denon.  They had me use the small screen on the front of the DENON receiver and make changes to the settings - turned on CEC and E-ARC and update the firmware. then I plugged the HDMI cable back into the E-Arc port of the TV and voila - The Denon's OSD was now on the TV Screen AND, my ROKU Premier (Yeah I bought one of their cheap bare bones ROKU because the community suggested that some settings inside the ULTR is the problem) is now working flawlessly!  So in my opinion, it was the older Denon X7200WA that was the problem and the newer Denon interfaced with no issues in my system.  There may be cheaper was of fixing the problem but this worked for me.  Thanks all in the community for all their input

I was having a similar issue as my Samsung TV was working fine until the latest update by Roku and then the CEC stopped working.

I spent about 30 minutes testing my internet out and unplugging the television and power cycling all devices and that did not work.

I found out that all you have to do is 1. turn off your TV. 2. unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the Roku device. 3. wait about 30 seconds and plug back in. 4. then turn your TV on.

that resolves the problem.

Re: Roku Ultra causes HDMI-CEC issue

My Roku went belly up last night and I can't seem to get it back on.  These answers are way too techy for me.  Can someone please explain in simple terms what I need to do to?  I turned off power to TV and ROKU, unplugged the HDMI, plugged it back in, turned power back on.  The remote will turn the TV on, the Roku light flashes, but it does nothing else.

"belly up" doesn't really tell us anything. Exactly what is or is not the Roku doing? We need to know the specific model number, not just the name (there are 8 different versions of the Ultra and five different Roku 2 players for example).

Not sure exactly whet "belly up" means other than it died?   My CEC issues were satisfactorily resolved when I dumped my 9yr old X7200Wa  which I bought new  in 2023 qne thought that something with newer technology.might resolve the issue which it did.  So if you are connecting  to you TV yhtu sm older receiver you might consider doing that.
