Vividas Java player with Roku

Hi,

I was wondering if the Roku team would be interested to allow Vividas Java player to be included or run on the Roku STB?

Check out Vividas: http://www.vivdas.com/

We can stream a full movie in HD720P at 740kbps using Vividas Java player on Windows and Mac systems. The video and audio quality is just perfect and it is using very low bit rate.

The bit rate to do the same with H.264 and AAC, is about 2.9Mbps which is 400% higher than the Vividas player.

Let me know what Roku thinks of this add-on feature?

Thanks,

We have no intention of adding Java support to the Roku box.

Re: Vividas Java player with Roku

Or maybe Vividas could license Roku the video codec instead of using the Java player?

It's a very interesting high compression codec.

Checkout a movie trailer sample using Vividas player:
http://video.vividas.com/CDN1/auto_laun ... D3_715.viv

The quality is amazing and it uses about 740kbps of bandwidth in HD720P!!!

I'm pretty sure Vividas would be interested to have a STB solution for their streaming customers.

Just a thought!

Re: Vividas Java player with Roku

A couple of questions:

1. I measure my network using about 1.8 mbps while playing this clip. Are you sure about the 740 kbps number you quoted?

2. Vividas uses the VP6 codec, right? On2 themselves say "In terms of video quality, VP6 and H.264 are comparable" (http://support.on2.com/h264_faq.php) which seems to be the general consensus. I've never before seen any claim that VP6 is a factor of 4 more efficient than H.264. Can you point to any references for this claim?

Re: Vividas Java player with Roku

Hey Markn,

I saw the specs from their website:
http://www.vividas.com/support/

I couldn't find any information on the codec they use with their services. So not 100% sure if they use VP6 or not.

But even at 1.8Mbps, it's still quite less than MPEG-TS with H.264 to stream 1280x720 (HD 720P).
