Roku won’t stop scrolling

Yesterday, my Roku stopped working. My TV was off all day, and when I turned it on last night to watch some movies, it kept auto-scrolling and wouldn’t stop. I changed the batteries, unplugged everything, and even moved the router's location multiple times, but it still did the same thing. The scrolling only stops if I cover the Roku itself with my hand. Is there a fix for this?

@User_738192-

From your "cover the Roku with your hand" comment, am I correctly inferring that this is a separate Roku device connected to a TV, rather than a Roku TV with Roku capabilities built in?

  • If covering the Roku with your hand stops it, this implies it is most likely getting a continuous infrared "scroll" command from something.
  • Does it still scroll when the batteries are out of the remote?  If it does, then the remote is not the culprit.
  • Other sources of infrared interference can be other remotes, fluorescent lights, and even direct sunlight.

Re: Roku won’t stop scrolling

@makaiguy Yes, it is a separate Roku device that I plug into the sides of my TV. It does not scroll when the batteries are removed, but the little light inside the Roku receiver continues to flash as if I'm pressing down on the remote.

Re: Roku won’t stop scrolling

@User_738192-

What model and model number Roku is this?.   Settings / System / About will tell you if you have sufficient control to get there, otherwise you can log into your Roku account at my.roku.com and scroll down to see your linked Roku device(s).

Your "unplugging everything" should have taken care of this, but ...

These things are just special purpose computers. Like their big brothers sometimes clearing things out by restarting them can correct problems. (For Roku TV users reading this: if you have "Fast TV start" enabled, turning the TV off and back on just puts it into and out of a standby state and does NOT give you a complete restart.)

Depending on your Roku model you'll find the "System restart" option under "Settings > System > Power", or on models without a Power option, under "Settings > System".

If a restart doesn't do it, or if you don't have sufficient control with the remote to navigate the Roku menus, you can also restart by pulling the power plug to the Roku for a few seconds then plugging it back in and waiting for it to restart.
