I wish to remove a remote. There is no way of doing so. Unpairing the remote via Back+Home+Pair key command only unlinks the remote, not remove it from Settings. How do I go about doing that? Thanks.
As far as I know, you can't remove the one and only RF remote paired to a Roku device. I'm sure @Tivoburkee knows more about this than me.
So I'd have to connect another remote to remove the gaming remote, yeah? I can't just use my phone and the IR remote to do this?
Not as far as I know. What are you trying to accomplish? Maybe there's another way. As I said, @Tivoburkee is the remote expert. He knows more about Roku remotes (and remotes in general) than almost anyone at Roku.
If you really, really wanted to get rid of it, you could always factory reset the TV, but I don't recommend going that far just to get rid of a remote.
No, there is no way to get the Roku device and the remote to forget each other. On device settings under Remote there forget remote option but it is useless. The device might forget the remote for a bit, but one press of the key on the remote and its back listed in the settings. These are my devices:
This is an absolute joke that you can't remove the remotes completely without doing a factory reset of the device. It always leaves at least one remote paired, in order to get rid of it you have to pair a different remote then you can remove the initial one. But now the second one is locked in. This is completely unacceptable.
The people at Roku are morons, the programmers need to fix this. But don't hold your breath, it won't make them any revenue so it isn't a priority. Stupid things like annoying rows added to the home screen and preset buttons on remotes is all Roku cares about since it gets them ad revenue.
Given that info, I could forget the device and then forget the pairing with Back+Home+Pair as a workaround, yes?
But I agree. Especially on the Roku TVs, where an infrared remote exists, you should be able to unpair/forget all paired remotes.
Well, thanks for the information.
Hi @Tivoburkee and those who contribute in this community - My question relates to the process for using an old remote with a new device. (I already determined compatibility is not a barrier.)
I just bought a Streaming Stick 4K to replace a 2019 Ultra, which wasn't connecting to wifi. After setting up the Stick with no problems, I realized the old Ultra's remote has a headphone jack and might be better to use with the just-installed Stick.
But I hadn't attempted to unpair the Ultra's remote from the Ultra device before I installed the Stick and paired it with the Stick's remote.
Having read here that a remote can only be paired to one device at a time, I have 3 questions:
1. Am I correct that in order to pair the Ultra's remote with the new Stick, I would have to a) unpair the Stick and its remote, b) hook up the Ultra to the TV again and attempt to unpair the Ultra's remote from the Ultra, and c) install the Stick again and attempt to pair it with the Ultra's remote?
2. If the Ultra won't connect to wifi (the reason for replacing it to begin with), will I even be able to unpair it from its remote, or will that remote forever be paired to an unusable unit?
3. Beyond gaining the headphone feature with the Ultra's remote, would I be giving something up by switching out a new remote for one from at least 5 years ago? I have no idea if the technology in the remotes (e.g., chips?) changes meaningfully over time leading to a noticeably better user experience, or if it's all about the features.
Thank you so much!
@Adam352 You can pair two remotes to your stick. To pair the old remote to your stick using the new remote go to settings, remotes & devices, add devices, remotes, add new remote. When the old remote is paired to your stick you can use either remote with the stick.
@Adam352 To further clarify. A remote can only be paired to one device, pairing the remote to a new device unpairs the remote from the original device. A device can be paired to multiple remotes. Perfect for your situation.
