Remote volume and mute buttons not working properly

Jump to solution

I got a new TCL tv with Roku and Roku remote 2-3 weeks ago. The volume buttons worked fine at first, but then they began not working regularly. I have to press the buttons several times to get the volume to work and many times it won't work. The mute button also has the same issue and it appears to be getting worse. I switched to a Roku voice remote that I already had and the same problem exists on that one. I tried chatting with a Roku person, but they said they couldn't help me after trying the whole take out the batteries and put them back in, and unplug the tv and plug it back in. I need to be able to use my remote. I fully admit I'm technology challenged, but it's weird to me that every other button on the remote works fine, but not the volume and mute buttons. Any suggestions? Thanks much. Cindy

Greetings here in the Roku Community, @coloradocramer!

Thank you for letting us know that your Roku remote volume and mute buttons are not working. We're here to help you with this.

To start with, kindly try to reboot your remote by following the steps provided:
  • If your rechargeable voice remote has a pairing button, press and hold the pairing button on the back of the remote for 20 seconds.
  • If your rechargeable voice remote does not have a pairing button, press and hold the Back and Home for 20 seconds.

After rebooting your remote please follow the steps below to set up your remote for Tv control.

  1. Press Home on your Roku voice remote
  2. Scroll and select Settings
  3. Select Remotes & devices
  4. Select Remote
  5. Choose your voice remote from the list and select Set up remote for TV control
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process
NOTE:
  1. When you hear music playing, select Yes to confirm. If you do not hear music playing, try increasing the volume using your TV remote.
  2. Next, your Roku device attempts to mute the volume using remote codes for the detected TV brand. If the music stops, select Yes.
  3. If the music continues to play, select No. Your Roku device was unable to detect the correct information about your TV, however, you can manually enter the brand by selecting Enter TV brand.
  4. As you enter the brand using the on-screen keyboard, a list to the right populates. After you select the brand, the music begins playing again. Select Yes when you hear it. As before, your Roku device again attempts to mute volume, this time using the first of multiple remote codes for the TV brand you entered. After each code is attempted, you are asked if the music stops playing. When it does, select Yes.
  5. Your Roku voice remote is now programmed to control both power and volume on your TV. Select OK to continue.
Please let us know if the issue is resolved if not, reply to this thread for further assistance. We are glad to help you.
