I have used roku for at least a decade. In the last year I've been plagued with issues. I keep having to take the batteries out and reset it to get it do literally anything. When it does work there's often significant lag or if I toggle down on a menu ONE TIME it will jump down two or three rows. What the heck??? What's up deal roku??

Sometimes it's not the remote; it's the Roku device.  Try restarting it from Settings->System or Settings->System->Power (as appropriate) when it occurs.  If it's so bad that you can't navigate the menu, just unplug the power for a few seconds.
