I'd suggest get a new remote. You don't say exactly which ROKU you have but, there are many inexpensive replacement remotes available. Some under $10. Always a good idea to have a remote just in case. like if you ever have to factory reset your ROKU.

If your TV and your mobile device are connected to the same network, the mobile app should find the TV.  If your TV isn't connected to your network, the app won't do you any good and you'll need a physical remote to get it connected.
