I finally got it to reset to factory settings. I held the reset button 30 seconds several times until it finally loaded the setup screen. I use this 43S425 as computer monitor in my office so I would advise never setting up an internet connection in that scenario, this way the terrible automatic updates will not cause you any problems. If you use it for roku you will need to have it connected it to the internet and take your chances.

Recovery Mode is the most invasive reset method and should only be attempted when all other methods fail. For more help with less invasive methods, learn how to system restart or factory reset your Roku streaming device.

If you already tried other reset methods and your device is still not working, follow the steps below to use Recovery Mode.

  1. Locate the Reset button on the back of your streaming device
  2. Press and hold the reset button for at least 20 seconds
  3. If your device has a reset pinhole, use a straightened paperclip (or similar)
  4. After a moment, your device will restart and display the Recovery Mode screen
  5. Use your remote to select your preferred language and then press OK  
     
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the internet
  7. Once connected, select Update now
  8. Your device will restart after it finishes downloading and reinstalling the operating system

  • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)

Onn Roku TV stuck on recovery mode

I have an onn. Roku TV.

Hardware ID: 7833X

onn. Model: 100012587 (65" 4K UHD HDR10 Roku TV)


I am having the issue that others seem to be having. The power was interrupted to the device and it went into the dreaded black screen, then boot screen boot loop, then it finally goes into Recovery Mode. This is not the first time this has happened.

I removed the two HDMI cables that were connected to the device, powered it off and back on. No luck, boot loop.

I have tried to do a software install by connecting it to my Wi-Fi in Recovery Mode. No luck, boot loop.

I have tried to do a software install via USB in  Recovery Mode. No luck, I get the message: "Current software is more up-to-date. Downgrade is not allowed."

I have tried to do a hard reset via the reset button in the back of the device. No luck, boot loop.

I am at my wits' end and I please need assistance with getting this device working again. Thanks.

While waiting for some advice, I tried two other things.

I plugged in a network cable and tried connecting the TV to the internet in the Wired (Ethernet) option in the recovery mode. No luck.

I tried the procedures in this Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/tcltvs/comments/1av2a6b/roku_bootrecovery_loop_issue_fix/

1. Unplug the TV then hold the power button for 20 seconds to drain any 'flea power'.
2. Hold in the reset button.
3. After 20 seconds, with the reset button still depressed, plug in the TV.
4. Keeping the reset button depressed, hold the power button for 30 seconds.
5. Let go of both buttons.
6. If the TV doesn't come on automatically after 60 seconds, press the power button.

… But still no luck.

You will see several discussions here with the same issue. Some for TCL devices, some for onn. devices. Like this one for example, the person contacted TCL customer support and they told them to do a similar procedure in the Reddit post:

Hoping that Roku support and the Roku software engineers figure this out soon, so people with this issue are not throwing away their hard earned money on these TVs that are having the same issues.

This isn't a solution. Not sure why Roku just emailed me this month-old solution but because I'm desperate, I tried anyway and it does nothing. Still can't get past "recovery mode" ...

None of the previous suggestions have fixed the issue.
