Re: Video Ads Autoplaying on Homescreen
As far as alternatives you could just build a raspberry pi and hook it up to a tv. There's tons of software you can run on it that would work for that purpose, basically just like a streaming stick. It would be less locked down, have more options, and its a fun project. If you've never built anything electronic either it's a good solid easy entrypoint.

Roku,
Needs to understand there are lines you simply do not cross. This is one.

Re: Video Ads Autoplaying on Homescreen
Absolutely terrible. I've recommended Roku for years and this would be the nail in the coffin for me. I know things suck and corporations are always squeezing blood from a stone for profit but this is despicable. I'd rather go back to buying full physical media rather than pay for and then watch ads for the 'convenience' of a smart TV; which is probably already selling personal data about my watching habits as is.

Roku testing full screen video ads playing before the home screen loads.
Let me tell you something Roku, and this post should go up the chain to executives: If you start putting full screen video ads into your system before I can even access the home screen I will send you a box full of Roku ultras that have been smashed into itty bitty pieces and I will NEVER buy your product again.
Someone might want to look at the extensive list of Roku hardware I have bought over the years and know that I will NOT stand for such a thing happening. You better hope I don't randomly get served these ads in your testing.
This kind of junk is bluntly evil and unacceptable. It pisses me off even thinking about it.

Re: Autoplay video ads on home screen
The moment I have a single forced video ad just to access the menu on any of my Roku devices they are all getting unplugged, destroyed, and trashed.
All the standalone units, the speakers, all of it.
They days of having to build our own media players and streaming platforms is returning it would seem... Sad

Re: Video Ads Autoplaying on Homescreen
I’ve been a loyal Roku customer for more than a decade.
Strike One was the increasingly intrusive static ad-insertion (ads on home page, force-changing home-screen theme, etc.)
Strike Two was forcing customers to accept a major change to Roku’s terms of service last year at device startup, or risk losing device functionality.
This is Strike Three: if I see a single ad of this type the Roku’s hitting the trash and I won’t look back.

Re: Video Ads Autoplaying on Homescreen
It happened to me last night as well. Sent a complaint to Roku but already looking into other options for streaming. I have a **bleep** Roku TV so even to access my PS4 I have to go through an advertisement now and that's complete B.S.

Ads playing before the home screen
Apparently Roku is trying to shove advertisements down our throats before we can use our TVs now. It's complete B.S. that I can't use my other devices, PS4, Switch, etc. before Roku forces me to watch an advertisement. I will be dumping my TCL Roku TV if this isn't fixed. Roku doesn't have the right to hijack all of our devices!

If these don't cease soon, I will be finding another streaming solution. Obnoxious.

Try Settings/Accessibility/Auto-play video and set it to OFF.
