A video played just because I turned on my TV. That I bought years ago, and has never done this. How do I turn this off? I will replace both of my televisions and never have anything to do with Roku again if they are forcing this on us without any chance to opt out. How can you just change a product I bought 8 years ago?
I've used Roku boxes on all my TVs since the beginning. (I currently have 8 devices registered on my account.) I was starting to look at a Roku TV to replace my old non-smart TV. I was even looking into the Roku smart home hardware. Having full-screen ads added without permission or anyway to opt-out is a deal killer for me. I've supported and promoted this company for years. This is the last straw.
Is this continuing for you?
I experienced this one time a week or more ago, a promo for Disney's new Moana movie. It has not happened again here.
I think this was a universally hated trial balloon from Roku.
Happened to me late last night. Was not the Moana movie, it was something else. So if it's a trial, the trial is still ongoing.
Try Settings/Accessibility/Autoplay video, and turn it OFF.
Happened to me also. Very unhappy, Roku. I didn’t spend $1000 for a TV to be forced to watch ads. Stop it.
Just got my first startup ad on the Roku Ultra - with sound! I was prepared to click to bypass the annoying video having read about these ads, but it was SHOUTING at me. Something about Wicked on Disney. I didn't leave it up long enough to read about it. Had to get up and go post this notice to add to the complaint numbers. Tempted to also contact Disney about my displeasure.
When I turned on my device today a video ad automatically started playing. No! This feature needs to go away. If Roku is going to start playing video ads when I just turn on my TV I will be leaving for another company with extreme prejudice.
If this continues then I will dump Roku even if I have to build my own system. I got this because it worked and it was easy and simple from the kids to use as well as myself. But I have no problem downloading open source software and doing it on my own hardware I buy if I have to. And I won't encourage and tell everyone else how to do it I will post it on all the social media sites I own and I won't stop until Roku just continues their garbage idea of showing video ads on the home screen!
Nope. They continue this (saw it first time today), and I'm sending all my devices (7 total) to the green recycler, and never looking back.
I bought the device that is a platform for the other services I pay for. If they have a revenue issue, charge more for the device, don't try to extort cash from the captive audience...
Choice is the only power users have. The cord-cutting trend that made Roku possible in the first place should have proven how much we approve of being messed with.
