Hey Community Roku users,
Is your Roku describing everything on screen? That's the screen reader!
What is the Screen Reader?
This feature reads screen titles, menus, and options aloud, helping those with visual impairments navigate Roku. (Previously called Audio Guide)
If your device is speaking aloud and describing actions, the Screen Reader feature is likely turned on. This feature narrates screen names, highlights key actions, and explains available choices, designed to assist users with visual impairments or blindness.
To disable the Screen Reader feature, you have two options:
-
Disable via Remote:
- Press the star button (*) on your remote 4 times quickly. You'll hear "Screen reader disabled" if successful.
Please note:
-
When the screen reader shortcut is enabled, you can quickly press the star (*) button four times to toggle the screen reader on or off from any screen. However, when the shortcut is disabled, pressing the star (*) button on your remote four times will not activate the screen reader.
-
Disable via Settings:
- Press the home button on your Roku remote.
- Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader.
- Set the option to "Off".
If the voice describes content during playback, this is a separate feature.
