Within the last several months, intermittently there is no audio on any app, and I need to reboot it. The SW is 14.0.4 Build 12221. It was updated on 10/18/24, which is I think about the time I started having issues. But it could be a coincidence. The issue seems to occur after the Roku has been idle, such as when first change the input on my TV to enable it at the start of the day. I have the power save option set to off. Also, occasionally it won't show any apps, just the menu when starting. The apps generally come back after navigating with the remote.
Has anyone else had this issue? Do I need a new Roku? I see there's a new 2024 version, but the remote doesn't have a Sling button, and I use this app exclusively. Maybe I can use the same remote on the new one if I get it?
Thanks!
Do you have "power saving" enabled under Settings->System->Power? If so, try disabling it.
Instead of restarting it, can you switch the TV's input away from the 4800 and back (like from HDMI1 to HDMI2 and then back) and restore the sound?
The remote from your current 4800 should work with pretty much any Roku device and certainly the new ones.
Assuming you have Settings/Audio/Digital output format = Passthrough (Auto may/does cause occasional dropouts as all non-DTS audio is transcoded to the highest detected Dolby level of the connected device)...
Unfortunately there are longstanding (many years) audio bugs with (all versions of) RokuOS that cause occasional dropouts of Dolby encoded audio.
If you don't wish to reboot there is a better workaround to restore audio for models with a Dolby decoder (4640/4800/4802/4850): Change Passthrough to Auto for a few seconds (scroll around the UI to force UI navigation sound) and then back to Passthrough - it should be working again (test by scrolling around the UI).
Otherwise you can complain to Roku CS about the issue, though don't expect them to create a trouble ticket (remember, this issue goes back a decade), but rather have you do a series of pointless troubleshooting steps.
The 4850 (2024 Ultra) also suffers these audio issues, so it wont resolve it (you'll also need to disable Sound Modes upon setting it up since they are enabled in OS14 by default, which also cause dropouts/static/latency/volume shifts/etc).
Thanks for the quick reply and help! Yes, I do have the power saving disabled in settings. I'll try the input switching next time it happens. Also thanks for confirming the 4800x remote will work on newer devices
Thanks for the reply. I have the Digital out put format set to Auto, but I will try the Auto setting. I also enabled Menu volume to test the solution.
It took a few days, but the problem came back. After enabling the UI sound, I now now that the navigation sound is also muted when the problem occurs. Unfortunately, switching from Passthrough to Auto and back didn't help. I still had to reboot to get the sound back.
Again, thanks for the reply. I tried switching the TV input from Roku to TV and back, but it didn't bring the audio back. It seems only a reboot does. I've now done a system reset and will see how it goes.
