I know of no device called “basic” in the world of Roku, so model numbers like 3820 (for example) would tell more.  This is a really basic question but you never said anything about making sure the TV is on the correct input port, or that you tried a different port, or a different TV so I thought I’d throw those ideas out.  (I’m assuming this is a Roku device attached to a TV, rather than a Roku TV.)

Ok, yes, I am not good at explaining this, but, my handheld control and attachment to TV is several years old and has worked fine for all that time, until this morning. I only have one tv. So yes, it must be on the correct port. I don't know what model it is or how to find out. Yes it is attached to a flatscreen table top TV (no ROKU TV) I usually can usually click once on remote to turn on tv and get Roku just fine. My wifi is working fine to my laptop and my regular TV remote works fine for turning on TV. but still Roku remote when clicked lites up the TV device for a second, but it doesn't come on.

A bit confusing..if you properly registered your Roku you'll find the model and serial number in your Roku account profile. Please look that up and post it. Beyond this, does the TV come work without the Roku? If not, all things point to the TV. Roku devices are normally warm, so its not something to be concerned about.

Yes, it must be on the correct port in order to function, but have you verified that the TV is actually on the correct port.  For example, if the Roku is attached to HDMI 1, but the TV is set to HDMI 2, then you would get the behavior you describe.  (The cable being disconnected would also produce that behavior.)
