My kids are seeing the horror thumbnails and having nightmares. Very upset with this new recommended home screen.
Hi @Dfjy3498,
Thanks for the first post to the Roku Community!
We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. That's not what we aim for. Please be advised that you can now customize your features by navigating to Settings > Home Screen > Recommendation Rows. You should see an option to show or hide it. After doing so, you can try to restart your Roku device by going to Settings > System > Power > System restart (if you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step).
Keep us posted on what you find out.
All the best,
Chel
Hoo! I typed up a super angry post just about that recommended row on the top of the screen, but Roku DID in fact make an option to disable that!!! Yay :3 idk WHY my TV added the row without me turning it ON, but the fact that I can turn it OFF and have my TV back to normal uwu great. Jus saying, ads that are on the side of the menu are harmless to me, I don't mind 'em. But if the ads ACTIVELY make it HARDER for me to use my remote to select the right HMDI input, I will come back here to explode all over these forums uwu yay for Roku fixing their stuff and giving us options!!! thank you roku :3
THANK YOU - that fixed it
Are you kidding me? Who thought this would be a good idea? This is terrible!
sadly, not gone here.
Roku's horrible Recommendations row nightmare first started messing with my life around November 24, 2023. It just suddenly appeared on my Home screen. I didn't ask for it and didn't want it... and there was no simple, intuitive way to remove it.
I found this thread shortly thereafter, originally posted by tecweasel on October 26, 2023 — six months ago.
Roku eventually granted us the freedom to fix this nasty "feature" by going to Settings > Home Screen > Recommendation Rows and clicking the Hide option. This worked until two days ago, when the dreaded Recommendations row suddenly reappeared on my Home screen and I had to hide it again.
What the what??? Hours of my life have melted away. I'll never get them back. Any trust I once had for Roku is shattered. No wonder Roku stock is tanking.
But it gets worse. The Wall Street Journal published a story today (April 12, 2024) entitled "Roku Says Hackers Gained Access to 576,000 Accounts in Latest Data-Breach Incident." I wish I had never purchased a Roku device. The torture never stops.
That did exactly nothing what-so-@#$%ing-ever
The problem seems to be that layout / hide / restart will only work if you have selected the default theme pack under settings / theme packs.
But doing that seems to randomly prevent you from choosing other non-factory default options within the settings / theme section.
In my case i opted for the digital clock screensaver i've used for years but changes it back to the default more ad intensive screensaver.
So there may or may not be a sweet spot that will allow me keep both the homescreen and s reensaver i have contentedly used for years.
Or i may continue to be sadistically subjected to forced advertindoctrination from yet another source of the endless corporate greed meme.
Or i may never find that sweet spot because a newly spawned AI superintelligence keeps moving it away each time i reach for it , giggling malevolently as it does so
Or The Newly Spawned AI Superintelligence has melded with that Endless Corporate Greed Meme in act of digital-obscenity that proves that the end of all things grows nigh . . .
Or . . . Roku is real close to exceeding my tolerance for idiotic additions to my already overstressed anxiety levels.
Anyone else had enough of this horse-pucky?
I'm not gonna run right out replace all the roku hardware on all my many devices. But i'll never spend another dime on upgrading any of it.
The only real advantage roku has is the number of apps that work well and update frequently. Any want to be competitors gout there? Go get those apps made, toss in a selection of anime apps and maybe a few less than totally disgusting porn apps and Roku is history.
That did not work.
