TV remote app won't work please help

I've been using the TV remote app for my roku TV and suddenly it stopped doing anything when I press the buttons. The TV and my phone are connected to the same wifi, the TV is connected to wifi... I open the app, the TV shows up and I successfully connect to it but when I press the buttons nothing happens as if I didn't press anything at all. What could be wrong?

If you have a physical remote for the TV try a "System restart" under Settings->System->Power.  If you don't, just unplug the power for a few seconds.
