Roku TV (55R6AX): Simultaneous audio from HDMI ARC and Optical?

I have a 55" Plus Series Roku TV (55R6AX), a JBL Bar 2.1 connected via HDMI ARC and a 91-year-old FIL who doesn't hear well. I'd like to purchase wireless headphones like the Avantree HT280 or similar connected via Optical so that he can watch TV with adequate volume while the rest of us have the standard volume through my JBL Bar 2.1 connected via HDMI ARC.

Before I purchase anything, does anyone have experience with this working as described? Or would I need to use an HDMI audio extractor between the TV and sound bar for the headphone audio, and if so, any suggestions for which device to look for? Thanks to anyone who can help!

I believe the optical output is always active.  It seemed that way the last time I tried something similar on my TCL Roku TV.  Amazon has a good return policy, so you're not risking much to try it.
