I bought the 50 inch ONN on a Black Friday sale for a wonderful low price. I am mostly satisfied with the performance and have used Roku for a number of years. This ONN TV gave me some thoughts about returning it. My initial "tweaks" resulted in a picture that looked worse than the six year old Visio that it replaced! IMO, one of the most valuable features on a modern TV is the contrast and black levels. The reason why OLED TVs are so popular (and expensive) is the wonderful black levels/contrast. I couldn't get this ONN to look as good as my two older sets! Finding a suggestion in this forum I decided to reset the TV portion and try adjusting the picture again. I had better results the second time. I am looking for comments and suggestions where I might improve the picture even more. Here is a list of my current Picture settings:
TV Brightness - Brighter
Picture mode - Low power
Picture size - Auto (this set won't auto display 4K without coaxing!)
Dynamic contrast - High
Color temperature - Normal
Fine tune picture:
Backlight - 100
Brightness - 40
Contrast - 100
Sharpness - 100 (this setting, surprisingly, does not degrade the picture!)
Color - 50
Please share your experience and any alternative settings which work well for you.
Thanks!
How are you liking the Roku Sound Bar? I was planning on my next purchase being sound equipment.
I can't decide between just getting a sound bar or getting an actual 5.1 sound system with subwoofer, center speaker, front left and right speakers, and back left and right speakers.
I've seen some for a reasonable price online and with good ratings. But I've also seen sound bars with good ratings and a much cheaper price.
The best picture settings I've tried and use now are:
TV brightness: Normal
Picture Mode: Movie
Backlight: 100
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 100
Sharpness: 25
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Picture Size: Direct or Auto
Game Mode: Off (unless you are gaming of course lol)
Dynamic Contrast: DEFINITELY OFF
Gamma Correction: 2.2
Noise reduction: Off
Color temperature: Warm and my custom settings that I found online for this are as follows:
100%- RGB (20,1,-21)
90%- RGB (6,-3,-9)
80%- RGB (8,-4,-6)
70%- RGB (10,2,-1)
60%- RGB (4,0,-6)
50%- RGB (11,3,1)
40%- RGB (15,4,2)
30%- RGB (7,7,-7)
20%- RGB (3,-3,-6)
10%- RGB (-12,-18,-19)
5%- RGB (0,0,0)
Color Space: Auto
Try those and let me know what you think. To me, they give the best 4k cinematic experience. If you are watching something in HDR, use Dark HDR mode and also with all of the settings above. It looks really good to me.
My wife is age 85, I am 76 and we both use hearing aids. The small sound bar works very well for us. We very seldom watch movies so movie mode doesn't interest us. We have T-Mobile cellular Internet ($50/month) 400 down/150 or so up. Mainly watch Youtube on the Roku. Lots of news and entertainment for a very low price.
After watching and analyzing the picture I found that setting Dynamic contrast to Off made for a more consistent and satisfying overall picture brightness.
Thank you for this. I did change the Dynamic Contrast to "OFF" though. I get a more consistently better picture that way. Thank you for the tips though.
Thanks for commenting! My settings have changed slightly.
Picture mode - Standard
Dynamic contrast - Off (as previously noted)
Brightness - 50
I purchased a Roku mini sound bar that sits just in front on the set and it makes a noticeable difference. It automatically turns on and off via the CEC function.
