Time to sell every roku item I own,

Jump to solution

Time to sell every **bleep** piece of roku hardware item I own, which is a lot, and more than you can imagine that I've collected at their ridiculous high dollar costs over the years. But when you decide to start dropping content that you think you have the right to choose for me or not to choose for me to, then it's time to go and look for a different platform that will play my favorite apps. However Roku believes they now have the right to decide what's proper for me to view, or what they belive to be ethical apparently?  Well then Roku, enjoy your falling membership rates and dwindling sales,  because it's time to go and look for a different platform. Bye Roku

As noted in other threads, Roku is dropping ALL private channels. Many were being used to share illegally pirated material, not just adult material. This puts Roku at legal liability.

Whatever the reason. I will be dropping Roku and going to another yet to be named platform that does support it. Have had Roku for a very long time and had at least 10 models over the years. Will be sad to leave it but it's Roku's fault.

No, I can't fault Roku for protecting themselves again legal action if a non-certified channel is providing content illegally. It was far too easy to build an uncertified channel and offer unlimited users a code to install it. It makes perfect sense to eliminate the non-certified channels. While that means that some channels that were offering legal content will be dropped, there's an avenue for them to certify their channel. My guess is the adult content providers don't want the restrictions/requirements that come with channel certification. That's their choice.

Re: Adult channels and Adult section

agree fully why not offer adult channels privately...

then they can offer channels from vivid,,hustler,,and apps from pornhub ect,ect..

if it's you're tv you should be allowed to watch whatever you want in the privacy of you're home..

No more non-certified channels? Bye! My 6 rokus are gone, I'll never buy another. Freakin' morons.

Are you going to refund the money I spent on my rokus now that you're changing the functionality that I use?

Maybe you should pull your head out and wash your hair and grandfather previous devices like any reasonable thinking person would do instead of F over everyone for your little subversive corporate bs nonsense.

idiots...

Roku has presumably decided they don't want to deal with the reputational and moral hazard of their current private channel distribution method.  The replacement is more locked down, dev/test oriented, and time limited.

Private channels don't make any money for Roku;  I believe that their accredited channels now need to allow Roku to serve ads within the content and report back what content was watched (and that was the crux of the YouTube dispute).  Roku also wants a share of subscription money.

Advertisers would not generally want to have adverts served in an adult stream (has been issues on YouTube with adverts served in controversial content).  So adult channels unlikely unless they were subscription only and paid a "toll" to Roku for privilege of a channel.  Mindgeek (owner of pornhub) is unlikely to want to do this.

Screen cast from a phone/tablet/laptop instead.
