Thanks. I was not aware that was now possible with any service. I know they can be transferred, but this is the first time I've heard of a Roku-based subscription being able to be used on a non-Roku platform.

I like Roku alot. It was an easy way to get all of the content I like in one easy place. But if they want to remove channels, I should consolidate elsewhere.

They take a cut of subscription fees that you pay for certain channels that you signed up with the Roku platform.

Since this thread is referring to an non-certified channel, Roku receives no payment from the use of those channels. Roku only receives a payment if a subscription is made directly through Roku. That isn't possible with any non-certified channel.

That is what I said. Read a little closer. Bottom line is that I don't care why they are canceling non-certifed channels.  Those channels are convenient on Roku. Without them,  Roku is not convenient to me anymore.

But non-certified channels have caused all sorts of problems for Roku, particularly in some countries that had legal issues with them. So they are electing to lock their system down like Apple does with iOS devices. Since non-certified channels have never had official support from Roku, and their end user terms of use specifically states that a non-certified channel can be removed at any time, it's within their legal rights to do so.

I understand that. Roku will be fine without me. Goodbye Roku.

Removing private channels is dumb. Why?

Jump to solution

Roku removing private channels is just dumb. Period. I'm an adult who should be able to sideload any app they want with a Roku TV they own. Why is Roku inserting itself into the equation and removing the ability to sideload mature apps? So you can claim beyond-reproachability for your fifedom of walled off apps?

You're wrong. You'll lose users. I don't appreciate you pushing your morals on me, it's not welcome. Just posting so you have feedback on this. I'm not happy here.

Re: Roku removing Private/Non-Certified Channels?

So I can't sideload the Pornhub app and use it anymore. This is the last straw for me, I'm an adult and I expect to be free to use the products I own. Just because they put it in the TOS that they can remove things doesn't mean it's anti-user, anti-consumer and will in the long run lose them userbase.

Becoming MORE like apple is not the way to go Roku. Shame I have two tv's with your OS that need to be sold or that I need a Fire stick to get content the way I want it. Roku is going downhill fast.

Re: Roku removing Private/Non-Certified Channels?

Roku is the ONLY streaming platform that I've ever used. I've owned at least five devices over the last 9 years or so. I actually love them. I have one in every tv in my house and a travel extensively for work and I use a Roku Stick in my travel bag. It's a product I like that I've used for almost a decade with zero negative issues. And now that trusted relationship is being jeopardized by feel good, condescending censorship trying to affect "the greater good"

I'm extremely disappointed in the decision that was made to remove private or non certified channels. They claim abuse and other scary sounding words, but at the end of the day, this is all about censorship. Plain and simple. I have several apps that are on the non certified list and this will effectively limit my freedom to watch what I want to, when I want to, and how I want to.

If that's the case, then I'll ABSOLUTELY not use this company's products after the censorship is implemented. When companies start to dictate to me what content I can and cannot see, or what channels I can or cannot watch, I ditch them like a hot potato.

I know, as a consumer and a tech enthusiast, that for every woke company out there, there is a competitor that will actually NOT do the things that make people feel like they are being restricted by condescending companies who play the morality police game. From here I'll choose with my wallet.

While I do think Roku makes very reliable and good products, I'm totally going to switch to one of their competitors if they actually move on this plan of theirs. A massively unpopular decision like this with their customer base should be a clue. **bleep**, just look at the number of posts on this single topic versus any other topic on this forum. It's just ridiculous that they are pushing forward with the censorship plan.

I highly doubt that Roku or anyone associated with their company will pay this diatribe any mind at all, but I will. I will turn my back completely on them over this. It's a dumb policy that doesn't take the customer experience into account and is a **bleep** shame. I would have continued to enjoy their product line. Now that brand loyalty is being intentionally shattered by an uncaring corporation. And I am pleased into a position to buy several new streaming devices to replace them.

This is one of the most disappointing things I've experienced this year.
