Roku TV Closed Caption settings

Jump to solution

My Roku TV has started changing CC options back to off every time a new video is started.

Doesn't matter which app I am using, and some of them don't have their own internal CC settings - so that eliminates settings conflicts.

Does anyone else have this problem?

And if it is an app issue, why does an app have the ability to change device settings?

Hi, @jollyre4

Welcome to the Roku Community!

We came across your post regarding the closed caption issue you are facing. We understand that the closed captioning feature turns off every time a new video starts, and we are here to help you fix this issue.

If closed captions are turned off on all Roku channels, a setting or preference may be causing the issue. Follow these troubleshooting steps.

Turning closed captions on or off

  1. Press Home on your Roku remote
  2. Scroll and select Settings
  3. To open the Captions menu, select Accessibility. If Accessibility is not listed, select Captions.
  4. Select Captions mode and choose when captions appear
    • Off–captions never appear
    • On always – captions always appear (when available from the service provider). When service providers use their own settings, closed captions are activated within their channels.
    • On replay – captions appear only after pressing Replay on your Roku remote (with content that supports instant replay)
    • On mute – captions appear only when the volume is muted
      • Note: The "On mute" selection is not available on all Roku devices.

Using closed captions during playback:

  1. After playback begins, press Star on your Roku remote to open the Options menu
  2. Scroll and select Closed captioning.
  3. Choose when captions appear
    • Off–captions never appear
    • On always – captions always appear (when available from the service provider). When service providers use their settings, closed captions are activated within their channels.
    • On replay – captions appear only after pressing Replay on your Roku remote (with content that supports instant replay)
    • On mute – captions appear only when the volume is muted
      • Note: The "On mute" selection is not available on all Roku devices.

When closed captions are turned on or off during playback, the setting is retained for future programs.

  • Note: Not all channels make this feature available.

For more available options you can refer to this support page: How to enable closed captioning.

Take note: Closed captions are a helpful feature that may not be visible until they are activated. Some service providers may require activation from within the channel, which could make Roku's closed captioning settings ineffective. If you are still experiencing issues, we recommend reaching out to your channel provider because they are the ones who maintain the channel itself.

Best wishes,
Elmer

I am having the same issues on Max, Peacock, and a couple of other channels. I have never turned my closed captions off, not on the device, not from home- settings, not even using the * button! It does this on SO MANY different shows; it does not matter which network provider, app/streaming service, Wi-Fi provider, the closed caption will not stay on!!

I have tried absolutely EVERY SINGLE suggestion on this website and dozens I found online - all to no avail!

I have reached out to streaming services, apps, networks, etc.. and they all concur that the problem is with Roku.

Please Roku, I'm begging you or you all or They or Sir or Madam or Y'all(The ROKU Powers That Be).............. FIX THIS ISSUE, please!

Sincerely,

I kept having trouble with the closed captions - I need them ON all the time and they kept disappearing even when turned on via the Roku * setting on the remote, and per the settings of each app.  I tried everything I could think of, including calling various support services.  Finally, I replaced my years-old HDMI cable and it worked magic.  Everything is working better now.  Faster, sound is better, and the closed captions stay on.

I had this same problem.  Finally I replace my old cheap HDMI cable with an upgraded expensive one, and it works like magic.  Closed captioning stays on now, across all apps.
