Re: Roku Media Player not playing MP4

Jump to solution

My problem:

atc98092, I have a USB plugged in with 12 MP4 files that I am wanting to play on a loop. Every time I try to play them I get a message saying "File Not Playable" then "The file might be damaged or corrupt". I had .jpeg files on the USB this morning and it worked fine. Anyone have experience with this?

Then please provide the information I asked you originally. MP4 is a container, nothing more. Your media won't play because there's something within that container that isn't supported by Roku. Once we know what's inside the container, we can determine what's not supported and provide a way to resolve the problem.

Just a hunch, but you could run your files through Handbrake and convert them into a playable file. Handbrake isn't particularly fast (an hour video might take up to twice that long to convert) but it will ensure you have a playable file for Roku devices. They even have a number of Roku presets that you can choose from. Handbrake is free, so all it costs is the time it takes to convert your files.

Yes it is, thanks! I don't see any audio information in that file, but perhaps it's a video only file. What I do see is the H.265 video codec. Now I need to know what Roku player you have. H.265 is only supported by the 4K Roku players, so if you have an Express or perhaps an older 1080 Roku that would explain why it won't play.

I had this same problem. I was exporting a video file as an MP4. I exported as a 4K video file from Canva. It wouldn't play. I remembered that my particular Roku TV is a 1080 FHD TV, as opposed to 4K. I reexported as 1080 HD and it loaded the file just fine.

@DrHobbs There should be no issue with that video codec (AVC/H.264). However, what audio codec is within your file? You could see the same message if the audio is unsupported.

Well, there should be no issue with that audio either. I can say that I have seen media files before that wouldn't play, even though the codecs and container were supported, and a simple remux of the file cleared it up. Sometimes there's some glitch in the file that just copying it into a new file clears up.

Re: Roku Media Player not playing MP4

Hello everyone!

First, I’d like to say that I love my Roku TV! However my only issue is constantly the MP4 errors. “That the codec used to compress the video is not supported” It’s highly disappointing especially when your binge watching a great show and you get to the finale and can’t play it! All the data matches the other files. I have even gone as far as obtaining a new file from a different source or having to convert it. A lot of work. So I’m wondering is there another free player that you can recommend?
