came here just to say what a wonderful thread this was to read as someone trying to understand what roku is all about. I guess not for anyone looking for anything quick or simple.

A Roku player is extremely simple to use. There's a reason it's the most popular streaming device. Your opinion about it is not accurate.
then why did this question stretch to multiple pages ?

Because sometimes answering a technical question to someone who isn't adept at technology requires slow, careful explanations. This specific topic is quite simple, but there had to be several questions answered before the correct response could be provided. The simple answer is there is no way to watch what comes from a Roku device (the HDMI output) on a computer. The Roku Channel, which is not a Roku device, can be viewed from any computer connected to the internet, including phones and tablets.
And answering your question has now added several more posts to the thread. 😄
may as well add more...
I would definitely have to see some stats on your claim of "most popular streaming device" if you have some hard data. Are you a roku employee or just feel the need to boost them by saying stuff like that ?
and do you think they have done a good job of defining the term "roku channel" ?
Well, I can't seem to find any statistics about the most sold (which would translate into most popular) and I readily admit that Roku's share has likely dropped over the years with more competition. Are they still "the" most popular? I don't know. Am I a Roku employee? Not at all. In fact I'm getting ready to retire from the federal government after 40 years as an air traffic controller.
Should they have used the term "channel" when they refer to an app? Absolutely not, and I don't know who's hair-brained idea that was. It is confusing to many users, and even Roku themselves are starting to refer to them as apps now. And then they label their own streaming service "The Roku Channel". Just adds to the confusion.
It also annoys me greatly that they keep reusing the same name on players that have significantly different internal components. The worst is "Ultra", since there's now seven different versions of that model. They've now also done it with "Express", as the latest 1080 Express player is completely different from past models. Plus they've muddied the waters with Express and Express 4K. In the past they had five different versions of a Roku 2, and two Roku 3 players.
Am I a fan of Roku? Yes I am. But I'm also not afraid to call them out when they do stupid things.
So, we agree then that a large part of the reason this topic was confusing, is Roku's terminology. glad that's cleared up🙂
What do I need to do to install Roku TV Streaming on my laptop?
You cannot install anything on a computer to make it a Roku player. You can use any web browser to watch “The Roku Channel “. You can also use a browser to watch many streaming services But that doesn’t make your computer a Roku.
