TV Screen Went Black While Streaming

RE: Roku TV Model Number 65R4AX

I purchased this television for my mom in April 2024. She has been enjoying it since we first received it, and she was very pleased with it overall. However, this past Saturday (11/01/2025,) the picture went black while she was watching it (at that time, she was watching the YouTube app.) She could still hear audio from programs and the menu UI, but no picture. We tried a power refresh/cycle, a soft-reboot using the selector series of commands (Home x 5/Up/Rewind x 2/Forward x 2,) and we even tried a factory reset via the back panel; all to no avail.

When the TV is powered on, it very briefly flashes the Roku logo, but that quickly (split-second) goes to black. One can almost make out a cycling "shimmer" of black coloration in the screen for a bit afterwards, but then nothing. To make matter worse, after attempting the factory reset, we can no longer even hear the menu UI interactions (as we believe the interface is in "setup" mode.) Please let me know if any additional information or details may prove helpful. We contacted TCL on the matter, but they directed us to Roku as they stated this particular model was manufactured directly by Roku.

I am posting to find out if this issue is common and to see if there is any sort of warranty coverage on the product within the given time frame. The purchase was made on Amazon on April 4, 2025 (I can provide the order details) if that helps.

NOTE: Apologies if this is not the correct channel for this type of post, but I could not find a way to email Roku support directly.

  • Dealing with this right now myself. Black screen that started out only happened when I tried going onto YouTube. If I went back to main menu or another app it worked fine for another couple of weeks. Then it only happened if I turned tv off- go to turn it on and it would flash the Onn logo start screen for a second then go all black but it has sound. If I try to reset it by unplugging and holding power button on tv for 60 seconds- plug back in and turn tv on, the red LED power light on front of tv would blink 8 times before going dark and black screen. Looked on here which said to do soft reset with remote. That took a bit but worked and stayed on as long as tv wasn't shut off. My cord has to go through Power strip so thought maybe that was it. Changed to extension cord and worked fine for few months. Now doing it again last week so left unplugged over night and then did hard reset while still unplugged since my tv is wall mounted I couldn't reach manual reset button,  but luckily was able to get it working and did factory reset through menu and worked great for a week. Then here we are AGAIN. Tv is 70" onn roku and not even two years old. Incredibly frustrating!!

  • SolitaryCynic That normally means the backlight or control board has gone bad on the TV, which is a common issue for some brands of budget level TVs.  Most TVs have 1-year warranties.  You can chat with Roku on their support page, and they should be able to assist or direct you where you can get technical support.  If is over a year old though, the warranty has expired.   There is a chat option at the bottom of the page on this link.

  • Thank you both, JWS9518 and Qbert77, for taking the time to respond to my post. Although the TV is more than likely out of any warranty coverage, I will try to follow up with Roku chat support to see if they can, at least, recommend an electronics repair location in my area that can assess the issue.

    Cheers.

SolitaryCynic Unfortunately, in this throw away society, it will most likely cost more to repair than to replace.  Some people have reported they have repaired some TVs themselves, but how cost effective or easy that is, I cannot say.  That is the problem with most of these budget level TVs, they use substandard components that don't last.
