Spectrum is requesting I order a Xumo Stream Box

Hello everyone, I subscribe to Spectrum Wi-Fi and stream my local channels on my Roku. I have Samsung TV models and Spectrum is requesting that I purchase their Xumo Stream Box in order to stream on my Samsung TV. They claim that their App will not work with 2012-2016 Samsung models. Is this true or are they pulling my leg. They also say that they will give me the Xumo Box free for one year and then charge me $5 a month. I turned in their $10 boxes because the were getting too expensive. Can I continue to stream on my Roku and NOT use their box.  I believe that just want to continue charging me for thing that I don't need or to monitor what I watch. Does anyone have advice?

  • I got the same email from Spectrum and I have the latest Rokus.  I think they are just trying to get you to get the Xumo so they can charge you for it after one year.

It depends on the model number of your Roku device.  You can't go by the name since Roku uses the same name over and over again.  There may be a model from 2016 that's still getting updates, but I don't believe anything prior to that is.  Check the model number of your device found under Settings->System->About and check the following list of devices.  If your model isn't still receiving updates, then Spectrum is correct, but if your current device is working then I don't understand the problem.  Is Spectrum saying that they will no longer be supporting your device?  Even if it is still getting updates, anyone using a model that's that old will benefit from an upgrade.

  • Yup - - Spectrum is looking for more revenue!  Renting Xumo Box's is one way.  Forcing those with TV's 8 years old or older to get them is a way to make that happen faster.  Outside of that, there is no real reason to disable the app on the older models.  Spectrum hasn't updated their app in years, And they aren't doing it now.  Don't get a Xumo Box... Use your Roku - at least until Spectrum decides to disable their app on it as well to sell their box.

  • No. If you are leasing the Xumo box, STOP now. You can buy those things for what it costs to lease for a year or less. The last I checked was Best buy $60, so that is a year leasing. Tell them you either want to buy it or you're going to turn it back in. You do not have to have a zumo box to use SPECTRUM. My advice is streaming only don't go for all of that broadcasting cable paying for channels nobody uses, the fees are outrageous, use Roku, Xumo or both. I'm a retired Telecom executive and one piece of advice I can give you is this, it depends on what department you're talking to, because if you're talking to somebody in sales they're going to say whatever they've got to say to get a sale through. Through and believe me I've been through everything with Spectrum and I even had to call the FCC. I got what I wanted and I got what I needed. It's Time for consumers to learn the game and play right back at them! I have Xfinity at my new address. No choice. Eventually there will be a better choice when it comes to fiber and streaming, the problem is that's going to bring more competition which you would think would bring down the prices but so far I've seen them go up. I will say so far my experience with Xfinity cannot compare with the good experiences I've had with Spectrum. But you have to know the name of the game, When they tell you the more you bundle, the more you save, come back with: "no the less you spend, the less you bundle, the more you save!" Eventually their cable competition will come to fruition, just like the days days of the baby bells and AT&T long distance... Yep I was there!

rdz73 No, you don't need to buy/rent a box from them to stream your Spectrum subscriptions. Spectrum has an app for Roku devices that can do the same thing. I can't say if they do or do not have a working app for a Samsung TV (Tizen operating system). But the app on a Roku player will work on any brand TV.
