Roku Express won't to connect Wi-Fi

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone could help please

My roku express has stopped being auto connected to my home WiFi. Nothing has been moved, no settings were changed etc. But the express stopped being connected a couple of days ago.

I ran a network check and after reconnecting to the WiFi it stated the speed was low. I've done multiple Internet speed checks and they always come back saying really fast - I have full fibre broadband, just me connected to the Internet, maximum 3 or 4 devices at any given time.

I've tried a couple of network resets and they haven't helped. Have now tried a full factory reset, but now it's not even letting me set up any apps and took an absolute age to get this far.

Please - has anyone else experienced this? What did you do to resolve the issue? Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Thank you 🫶

  • Of all connectivity issues, channel congestion is the most common. While there's no guarantee, I'd recommend you install WiFi Analyzer for Android or something similar for iPhone. Once installed, open the app and take note of the channel graph which will show how many others are using the same channel. The circular icon to the right provides the SSID and channels being used by those it detects and the star icon rates the best to worst in the area. Then log into the router and see if the default 'auto' feature for channels is set and if so, disable and manually select a channel with less congestion..Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply. My router is a standard issue plusnet one, so doesn't have the options to change channels 😕 i was assured by plusnet when they installed my full fibre that there would be no other household using this "line" - is this not the case? Sorry, I'm a little out of my depth here!

Are you sure you can't change wireless channels on your Plusnet router?  You should be able to use a web browser and type in 192.168.1.254 that should take you the router's admin interface where you can make changes. (your router's admin password is on bottom of router).

What is the model number of your Roku Express? (found under Settings/System/About).  Different models will have different capabilities.  If you have any model number other than 3960, you will be limited to using the 2.4ghz band so all changes will need to be made under the 2.4ghz band in the router settings. (select Advanced, and then the 2.4ghz band).

Under the 2.4ghz verify that you are using b/g/n protocols, and under "wireless channels", try using a manual supported channel between 1-11 instead of Automatic.  (1, 6, 11 preferred).  Verify that you are using WPA2 security.  (all these settings will be under the same tab).

Other thing to try is to change the wireless password. (avoid passwords with special characters and try using just numbers and letters).  Some older Express models had issues with some routers using special characters in the password. (usually it was the # sign that seemed to cause the most issues, though varies).

Here is Plusnet support site with a few easy to follow videos. (check out the 'how to login to router ' and 'how do I check or change my wifi settings'.)

Feel free to post back if still having issues.  Make note of any error message numbers you are seeing as well.  I do not see any indication that Plusnet offers wifi 6 on these routers so I don't think you are dealing with any ax/wpa3 issues. (if you see either AX as a protocol or WPA3, mention that in your response).
