Roku app remote is not connecting

My Roku mobile app is not connecting to my devices. I bought a new remote from Walmart and that is also not working. All I keep seeing is to make sure my devices are connected to the same network as my phone but I can’t use the remote to check what network my Roku is on?????? Very frustrating, someone please help. I reset the Roku device but I can’t get passed “what language” because I don’t have a working remote at all.

    What's the model number of your Roku device written on it somewhere?  If it's a stick with a USB cable that has the Wi-Fi receiver embedded in it, the cable may be faulty.
