Purchase a new Roku stick ?
I have a new RC GZ1 remote- but no stick to go with it. Can I buy one off Ebay and use that or are the sticks somehow tied to a certain remote ?

There's no reason you can't pair the RC-GZ1 to your new Roku Stick.
Remember newer Roku sticks the remote isn't actually paired to the Stick itself, but to the Long-Range wireless receiver built into the original usb cable.
