Private Listening keeps disconnecting

I have a Roku Premiere and I am having trouble with the private listening feature through the Roku app. I am playing a video from my phone and casting it to my tv through the Roku app and I am trying to use the private listening feature by connecting my headphones through my phone. It works for a few minutes and then it disconnects and begins playing the sound through the tv. I keep trying but it does the same thing. It'll play for a few minutes and then disconnect again. I've reset my Roku by disconnecting power and reconnecting, I've tried multiple headphones, I reset the router, I even tried two different phones. It's frustrating when one of the features I bought this Roku for doesn't even work right.

  • Guys, I searched for hours on a solution for this and never found it. The good news is I solved it on my own. It was the notifications in the Roku App. Ensure they are completely turned off. This was so frustrating, but once I shut those off, I had no interruptions. Like this post if this worked for you so that others can fix this issue. Hard to believe I couldn’t find this solution on the web.

    cheers.

  • I am having the exact opposite problem. This feature can interfere with my Voice Access app and I have already disabled the Private Listening feature in both my phone's settings which is a Moto x4 and within the Roku app itself and it will still activate when I don't want it.

  • I gave up on Roku. I bought the 4K this Summer. No more than two weeks later it continuously popped up "Your device is overheating disconnect". I was sent an extender that was incompatible. It has to have a flat not curved entrance and no where is that available. I finally gave up and put it in a drawer. Now I'm using my 4K apple box. I prefer Roku but I'm done with them after this headache.

  • I have the Roku Streaming Stick+, iPhone X and AirPods Pro. My ISP is ATT. I have had the Private Listening Disconnect issue as long as I’ve had a Roku device and used the app…which is several years now. I’ve come to expect the problem all the time now and realize Roku can’t fix it, even though you all have given them a ton of information. I’m just trying to reset as quick as possible, so I can get back to my program. Last night, I found a quicker reset. It’s not a solution, just a reset.
On the iPhone…Pause the program. Swipe down to the Control Panel. Tap the icons to Turn OFF the Wifi and the Cellular connections. Then tap again, to turn them back on. Go back to the Roku app and tap the headphones icon to make sure they’re reconnected.  Tap the Play icon and resume watching/listening, until it happens again, because it will. Wash/Rinse/Repeat.
I’ll do this until I’m tired enough to buy the Apple TV device, because I doubt Roku can fix the problem.

Agreed. This is Roku's mess and they are unwilling to fix. And they will loose customers for it. SMH.

  • I have another Bluetooth device that was trying to connect automatically.

I looked at the 'devices available' list in my phone's Bluetooth connections settings and then physically disconnected each device's power one at a time (keeping the ROKU connected) and IT STOPPED CYCLING !  :-).

My private listening WORKS AGAIN !

Thank you. I have 3 tv’s with Roku devices. I disconnected each unused device through the Roku app itself by tapping on the 3 lines, then tapping Disconnect Device. So, the only device connected was the one on the tv I was watching. It never disconnected the whole time I was using it. That tells me the issue is with the Roku app. It should be disconnecting each device you are not using once you make your choice. Thanks again.

  • The same thing happens to me. I've got a Note 9 running on the Android system and when I have the app open it sometimes goes to private mode automatically when I don't want it to. And then when I want to put it in private mode it randomly comes off. My wife has an iPhone 11 and the same thing happens to her.

        Thanks for the posts.

Have you already tried removing the mobile app then adding it back again to see if you are still seeing the issue occur?

Please keep us posted what you find out.

        Thanks,
        Danny

  • I’ve been having the same issue (not just when casting) and through some trial and error, I realized that private listening would disconnect whenever I lifted the wrist I wore my Apple Watch on. I usually have the “wake on wrist raise” function on, so when I lifted my wrist, my watch screen would turn on and disrupt the connection somehow, I guess since it’s connected to my phone via Bluetooth. If none of the other solutions work for you and you have an Apple Watch, try turning off “wake on wrist raise” in the settings on your watch. I hope this is helpful to someone!

  • After trial and error I found 2 things. First I have a router with another router plugged in being used as a bridge. The  TV Ethernet cable was plugged into the router. First solution was I looked and found the TV was set to wired connection, when I set it to wireless connection the private listening worked. Second I plugged the Ethernet cable into the bridge and with the TV set to wired connection it worked. I hope this helps as I found nothing that would help me.

  • I found the one and only true solution. Just buy a Roku remote with a headphone jack.
