The Roku model can't be a Roku Stick for it to be controlled by cheap aftermarket IR universal remote. I like a lot is the Onn 6 universal remote from Walmart:

Or made by the same manufacturer the Insignia at best buy:

Correct. There is no third party remote for Roku players that use WiFi Direct. They are all IR only, and the only Roku players they will work with are the non-Stick models. Every version of the Roku Stick (the one that plugs directly into the TV without using an HDMI cable) is WiFi only for the remote. IR remotes cannot be used on them. Tivoburkee provided an example of a remote that does what you ask, but again it won't work with a Roku Stick.

Now, that we got the case of sticks out of the way. Even if your Roku model came with wifi remote, it will still accept IR commands from an aftermarket universal remote as long as you have line of sight from the universal remote to the front of the Roku.
