Unable to screen mirror on S24

I have an android s24, I used to be able to select smart view from the settings on the phone then select my roku device and thus mirror my phone to the TV.

Well that's not the case anymore. Roku is asking for Roku cast and is then requiring an internet connection.

Yes, I could use my phone as a hot spot, but just last week I didn't need to do that.

Is there a work around? I'd like to keep using my unlimited data on the phone as I use the Hotspot data for work.

If I turn on the Hotspot to turn on rokucast, then the smart view/mirror option says to turn off the mobile Hotspot.

  • Hi mathgeek, what’s happening is that recent Roku updates now require Roku Cast for mirroring, which needs the phone and Roku on the same network. The old Smart View direct mirroring without Wi-Fi is no longer supported on many Android devices.

    Workarounds:

Use your phone’s hotspot cautiously: Temporarily connect the Roku to the hotspot just for casting, then disconnect after mirroring.

Use a Wi-Fi router: If possible, have both Roku and phone on the same Wi-Fi network (even if it doesn’t use mobile data for other tasks).

Third-party apps: Apps like Screen Mirroring for Roku or Mirror for Roku can sometimes allow direct casting without an internet connection, though performance varies.

Unfortunately, there’s no official way to bypass the Roku Cast requirement while using mobile data only.
