How do I change the Location so I can get local weather and news?

Roku shows my location as Seattle, WA even though we're in Manton, CA. How do I change the location so I can watch local news and weather?

  • Hi Patti51,

Thanks for reaching out, and welcome to the Roku Community!

Try changing your zip code by following the steps below.

    1. Press Home on your Roku TV remote.
    2. Scroll and select Settings.
    3. Select System.
    4. Select the zip code and enter your zip code.
    5. Press OK to update the zip code.

Then try to rescan to see if that makes any difference.

    Thanks,
    Rey

I am having the same problem! It suddenly thinks I'm in Bonita Springs, Florida, when I live in Maine. I use Hulu Live and am getting Florida news channels. I have Hulu Live set to my current location, my zip code in Roku IS MY CORRECT ZIP CODE and so far the only advice I get is to put in my zip code. I've reset my Roku, resent the network connection, etc. It still thinks I'm in Florida. I know this doesn't help you, but if you've found a solution, let me know!

Roku streaming devices have no tuners or antenna inputs so they can't receive live over-the-air broadcasts.  (Roku TVs with Roku capability built in DO have antenna inputs for this purpose.)   So any network programming received on a Roku device must be streamed over the internet via one of the streaming channel apps that carry local channels (YouTube TV, fubu, Hulu + Live TV, specific ISP cable service app, etc.).  It is that channel app that determines which locality's stations you get.

Some channel apps determine your location by the IP (Internet Protocol) number assigned to you by your internet provider. If your internet provider assigns or changes your IP number to one attached to one of its servers located in a different area, that could change your apparent location and thus the local stations you are provided.

You can use an IP info website like the ones listed below to see where the IP number assigned by your internet provider indicates you are located. If this doesn't represent your actual area, you can contact your internet provider and ask to be reassigned an IP in your area.

    Some IP info websites:
      https://www.iplocation.net/
      https://www.iplocation.com/
      https://tools.keycdn.com/geo
      https://www.ipfingerprints.com/
A web search for "IP Location" can find many more.

I'd suggest checking on several of these as it seems to be an inexact science. They should all report your real IP but they may not all give the same location results and you don't know what service your channel app uses to check IP location.

  • I am also having this problem.  It just started acting up today. My location zip code is correct on my Roku. It still is getting the wrong local networks for my area using Youtube tv. Not sure what to do. Waiting for a response from Youtube.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Csoren some providers use IP addresses to determine your location, while others use the address you registered for your account. Depending on your ISP, your publicly visible IP address could be nowhere near your actual location.

Some apps allow entering the zip within the app, while others require doing so on the user account web page. I don't use YouTube TV, so I don't know what method they use to determine your location. You really need to contact Google for support with their apps (Google owns YouTube).
