Sleep timer on tv doesn’t turn off speaker

1-2 months ago, my Roku streambar suddenly started staying on when I set my TV’s sleep timer as I do every night. My TV goes off when the sleep timer is done, but the sound still comes out of the Roku speaker. Any idea what changed and how to fix it so the sound turns off when the TV timer goes off?
TV is Samsung

  • Hi Sharoo,

Congrats on your first post in the Roku Community!

We appreciate you for posting and you mentioned that you want to know how to enable the feature where you can keep listening to your Roku device while your screen is off. I will do my best to provide information to your question.

First, can I ask what is the Roku model you are using? Are you using a Roku TV?

If you have a Roku TV, we recommend enabling Fast TV Start on your Roku TV at any time using the instructions below:

    1. Press Home on your Roku TV remote
    2. Scroll and select Settings
    3. Select System
    4. Select Power
    5. Select Fast TV Start
    6. Highlight Enable 'Fast TV Start', and check the box to enable it

However, If you have a compatible Roku device and listen to audio streamed from a Bluetooth device such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer when the TV screen is off. you can simply power off your television using your TV remote and Bluetooth audio will continue playing. You can also begin playing Bluetooth audio on your smartphone, tablet, or computer when the TV screen is already off. Just make sure to connect your Bluetooth device to your Streambar or soundbar before you begin.

We hope we have addressed your question appropriately, but please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or additional feedback.

  • Since we weren't getting answers here, I started a chat on my phone with Roku and I have a solution that worked for me!  Hopefully it will work for everyone else having this issue.

    1) Turn off the screen reader option.  Home > Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader > Off.  Mine was already on Off, but the chat told me to turn it On and then Off again.

    2) Home > Settings > System > System/Software Update > Check Now.  Mine was already up to date, but if not, do the update.

    3) Home > Settings > System > System Restart/Power > System Restart.

    4) Home > Settings > System > Advanced System Settings > Audio and video reset (I didn't have this, I think anyone with a Roku TV will have this and should complete this step.  I didn't complete it since I have a Samsung TV).

    5) Unplug the Roku speaker/streambar from the TV and from the power outlet.  Unplug the HDMI cable and device.   Wait 30 seconds and pull it back again.  For those with Roku TV, the instructions were to unplug the Roku TV from the power outlet.  Wait 1 minute and plug it back again to a different power outlet.  I was using a power strip, so I plugged the power cord for the speaker to a different outlet too.

I completed these steps and my sound is now going off with the TV when the sleep timer goes off.  I hope it works for everyone else too!

I followed the steps but unfortunately, it didn't work for me. 😞

I went though these steps on my TV and, unfortunately, it didn’t work. I ended up turning off the Fast Start option and that seemed to have fixed the issue. Hopefully they will fix this problem because I’d like to have the Fast Start enabled so I can Air Play from my iPhone.

I have the same issue.  It was working previously - the audio stopped on the streambar when the tv went off and now it doesn't work anymore.  I can't figure out why that happened.

I meant to say, my Roku Streambar continues to play audio after my Samsung TV shuts off with the TV's sleep timer. It previously worked (by shutting off the audio) and now it continues to play audio.

        Hi MKM89,

        Thanks for the clarifications.

We would be more than happy to look further into this issue but will need more details. How long has the issue been occurring? Have you checked if the Fast TV Start feature is enabled or not? In addition, can you please specify the exact steps you are taking to reproduce this issue so we can investigate further? Please provide us with the serial number of your Roku device.

Please keep us posted with the details and we'll continue assisting you from there.

        Best regards,
        Mary

      Hi MKM89,

Thanks for posting in the Roku Community!

We'd like to know more about how we can help. I understand that your Roku Streambar is not working each time you screen off your Roku TV, is that correct? We recommend enabling Fast TV Start on your Roku TV at any time using the instructions below:

      1. Press Home on your Roku TV remote
      2. Scroll and select Settings
      3. Select System
      4. Select Power
      5. Select Fast TV Start
      6. Highlight Enable 'Fast TV Start', and check the box to enable it

Please try doing this and see if it helps with what you're experiencing.

      Best regards,
      Mary

Hi, up until a few days ago I could turn my TV off but still listen to my program with my headphones plugged into my remote. Now it shuts off in a few minutes. I have to turn the tv back on reselect my show and then turn it off again and hope that I fall back to sleep before the sound goes off.
how can I turn this feature back on? It sounds like the opposite problem that everyone else is having

  • I am having this problem on my TCL Roku Smart TV. It just suddenly began happening a couple of nights ago. Perhaps it is due to a software update? The TV is set to automatically update so I’m not sure when it last updated.

      Hi Community users,

Thanks for the posts regarding the issue you experiencing with the sleep timer.

We would be more than happy to look further into this issue but will need more details. Can you please provide us the following information:
      • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
      • settings that you have set for your sleep timer (screenshot would be most helpful so we can understand what you are seeing)
      • tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times and provide us with this ID)
      • steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing
Once we have this information, we will be able to pass it along to the appropriate Roku team to investigate further. We look forward to hearing back from you!

      Thanks,
      Danny

        Roku Streambar
        M/N: 9102R
        S/N: YL00FH073502
        Software Version: 11.5.0 8 build 4312-95
        Device ID: 2A12F073502

On my Samsung Series 5 TV, I simply go to settings, sleep timer, and select 30 minutes.  After 30 minutes, my TV screen shuts off but the Roku Streambar keeps playing the audio.

I tried locating the tracker ID by following the steps you provided (press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times and provide us with this ID) however, that didn't produce any information on my Roku Streambar.
