[Solved] Roku TV - Black screen on Live TV Channel

Hey, everyone. 

We’ve received reports about a black screen issue on the Roku Live TV Channel.

Status Update – 7/23: We believe this issue has been resolved.

If you're still experiencing a black screen while watching Live TV, please try performing a System Restart by going to: Settings > System > Power > System Restart

This should clear the issue for most users.

We're closing this thread for now. If you're still experiencing the issue, please create a new thread and include your latest Tracker ID (if you have one) and your OS version.

    We believe this issue has been resolved.

    For all impacted customers, please advise them to perform a System Restart by navigating to:
    Settings > System > Power > System Restart
    This should resolve the black screen issue occurring during Live TV.

    If any users continue to report this issue, please update this JIRA with a new Tracker ID and include their OS Version for further investigation.

  • I have a 65" Roku Pro TV that I have owned for about a year. Recently, about 2 days ago, while watching Roku live tv app, the screen suddenly goes black and the only thing I can do is hit the back button on the remote and start the program again.  I have done all the suggested steps in the earlier solved issue - rebooting, resetting, etc. but the problem is still happening.  It used to be an occasional problem, but it is now happening more frequently on any channel I am watching, but only on this app.  Network connection shows as excellent.

      This just started about two days ago where the live TV channels on my TCL smart TV turns off automatically after about 10 or 15 minutes. All the power saver settings are all set to “off”, including bandwidth saver. No other streaming platforms are affected, only the Roku live channels. The screen just goes black. It’s extremely annoying. I wasn’t having any issues prior to two days ago.

        Same thing is happening to my Roku Pro 65R8BX. Seems like it started maybe a week ago for me.  Anytime I watch a live Roku channel (news, etc) Almost after the episode or segment ends, the screen goes black. I have to change the channel and go back to it for it to display the show again.  I've checked for updates to the TV and the Roku app, both are current... ridiculous, paid around $1k for this TV less than a yr old for their updates not to work properly. 

        Years ago when this happened, they had to release a patch to fix whatever they broke in a prior update. Smh

      I found a thread for this about a month ago and I followed all the steps but, it’s not fixing it. I have a Walmart Onn Roku TV that isn’t very old and I’m watching the Live TV channels (doesn’t matter the channel). Every show I watch, it gets just about to the end of an episode and then the screen goes black. The TV doesn’t shut off and it never recovers to proceed onto the next episode so, I end up having to go back to the Home Screen and back into the channel again (every 30 minutes) which is getting very annoying. I tried doing a manual system update but, there wasn’t one available, and I’ve tried resetting everything else like the former thread said but, nothing is working. Anyone have anything else? My plug in Roku device works fine in my bedroom.

      My TV is doing the same thing that these TVs are doing I don't understand it just started I've done everything just like these people have and it's still doing it

    have tried all fixes mentioned anywhere
    it is a week old
    uninstalled Roku channel then reinstalled  And STILL goes black after 50 min no matter what live channel we are trying to watch 
    seems to only affect ROKU Channel live shows
    after almost entire show tv goes Black /silent and if we simply shift channel up or down then back to original show, then it seems fine until it goes black AGAIN  AND repeat over and over

    before you ask
    it is updated to newest software
    all energy save/bandwidth save disabled 
    power is steady and good - fiber optic is steady and the best in the country 
    other roku tvs we have do not blackout on the roku channel

    this 55in tcl roku tv replaced another just like it that did not have this issue at all, despite same build/and was passed on to bestie still working fine

      While watching it will go to the Home screen. It seems to do this when triggered by a commercial

      After the new update, I noticed that some live streaming channels plays well for few minutes after switching. But a couple of minutes later the picture go dark while sound still on.

      This does NOT occur if I use the same channel on it's own APP outside Roku live stream. For instant, skynews live channel #143 this occurs every time I switch to that channel from one of on-the-air channels. But if I go to skynews app, this does not happen. So that means it is NOT a problem with the TV but it is a problem with the Roku OS.

        MY LIVE TV IS ACTING FUNNY IT PLAYS BUT THE AFTER AWHILE IT JUST GOES BLANK NO SOUND OR ANYTHING..WHAT SHOULD I DO IVE ALREADY DONE A FACTORY RESET

    Live TV shuts off or screen goes black while watching. In another discussion it says problem fixed. My just started July 16, 2025.  Checked for updates, says I'm up to date. It happens about every 15 minutes. My TV is only 5 months old.

      We get that you are also experiencing a black screen the moment that you try to access the Live TV on the Roku channel app.

      To get this investigated, please provide the details:

      • Roku model, serial number, device ID, OS version, and build. (All can be found in Settings > System > About.)
      • Tracker ID (press the Home button followed by the Back button 5 times on your Roku remote)
      • App build version (highlight the app and press the star (*) button of your Roku remote)

        Live TV screen goes black about every 15 min while watching. No sound either. Doesn't matter what channel it is on. I either have to change to a different channel and then back to channel I was watching or go to home and back to Live TV. Started yesterday, July 16. I have unplugged, system restart and system update.

        I’m having the same problem. It is only with Roku Live channels. It plays fine for a while then goes black with no sound. I change to a different channel and it works for a while and then goes black with no sound and if I switch back to previous channel it’s working again for 15-30 minutes before it goes black again. I have checked all my settings and the problem is not in settings. It is not in loose cords. This just started several days ago and I’m seeing where others are reporting the same problem. Would love to get it to stop. Thanks

  • I recently purchased 2 Roku Streaming Stick Plus 4ks and while watching Roku Live TV, the screen goes black with no noise. The device is still on...if you push OK, it shows what show and channel you are watching. If you change the channel it works again for a while then goes black again. Everything else seems to work fine as far as Streaming from different subscriptions. I put the same channel on both TVs at the same time and both channels went black at the same time. I have used older rokus on the same tvs with no issues. Is this a hardware or software issue? Debating on returning for new ones and hoping for a better outcome.

      Hey, I recently bought two Roku Streaming Stick+ 4Ks. While watching Roku Live TV, the screen randomly goes black with no sound, though the device stays on. Changing the channel brings it back, but it keeps happening, both sticks even go black at the same time. Is this a software issue? Thinking about returning them.

  • We are experiencing the same issue on our Hisense TV 50" TV.  It is definitely only when using the LiveTV app.  I atempted to remove and reload the app, but I cannot seem to find a way to delete and reinstall this app.

  • My 4 year old  TCL Roku TV has gone black screen with vertical lines for the second time. First time about a month ago and I followed video and was fixed. Now it doesn't work. Model No. 32S327

  • The picture cuts out to dark gray screen on live tv. For about a week now. We have two additional Roku tvs neither with issues.

      Hi, Im confirming that my ISSUE WITH SCREEN GOING BLACK NEAR END OF SHOWS ON LIVE CHANNELS ONLY.AS OF 7.24.25 SO FAR HAS BEEN PLAYING WITH OUT CUTTING OFF. IDK WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, I JUST HOPE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN! THANK YOU TO ALL INVOLVED WHO WORKED WITH GETTING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED!! {SOLVED}
