[Solved] Closed captioning on Hulu is out of sync

Status update 8/15: Good news! We believe the issue with the Hulu app's closed captioning out of sync is now fixed, and it should be up and running now.

    I’ve tried everything to try to get the Hulu CC synced to the video and nothing is working. I even waited a day. Something is wrong with Roku.

      My Hulu subscription contains advertisements. What about others? I noticed that when starting a new movie the closed captions will start displaying during the initial commercial. Obviously by the time the movie starts the captions are hopelessly out of sync. It seems that the component displaying the captions is not aware of the commercial placements causing the issue to happen.

      I have this same problem. It has been happening since Aug 5, 2025 at least. I am in north Florida.

      I started seeing the same issue starting yesterday. I tried reinstalling the app and restarting roku but neither helped. I tried the same video with Android/GoogleTV box and it works as expected.

    This is not a HULU problem.  I just installed HULU on my PlayStation 4.

    No problem at all with subtitles. They are synced.

    So the issue is with the ROKU streaming devices.  We deserve a fix here.

    I see this issue all over from a long time ago and none of the solutions work. When watching a movie with subtitles, it works fine until a Commercial and then the subtitles continue to appear during the commercial, so when the movie returns, the subtitles are no longer synced. I know this is a Roku problem because when I watch on the Hulu app, the subtitles work perfectly.

      Same problem with me, started 3 days ago and consistent on 5 different TVs.  But if I steam Hulu to my tv (not using Roku) the closed caption works fine.

      Please share with us the following:

      • Roku device model, Device ID, Serial Number, and Software version (can be found in Settings > System > About)
      • Tracker ID (press Home 5x, then Back 5x)
      • Hulu app build version

    I have a Roku ultra don't want to give my ID stuff here but I  and many others cannot use the service without  captions.  Please work swiftly on a fix.  There are laws in place to protect these users.

    Same issue here for a week or so, logging out, updating, uninstall/reinstall have not helped.

    Model 3941X, s/n X01600AFU8 (S07P216FU8GV), software version 14.6.4 (build 9915-CR), GC version 14.0.11.

    Issue ID GV-321-262.

    I'm also subscribed to Hulu with ads, subtitles appear early (i.e., I'm already seeing the conversation while the startup-ad is still running).

    Identical issue with Hulu on two additional Roku devices, it's extremely frustrating.

    It seems like this is a widespread problem affecting many Roku subscribers. I can't watch TV on Hulu because of it. I am ready to cancel my Hulu subscription if this is not fixed soon.

    I'm also having this problem. Like others, the problem seems to come from the ad breaks. It happens on all content. 

    After turning captions on and off a few times and playing different titles, I get no captions at at all. Then my app crashed. I restarted the Roku and am still getting no captions.

    The Hulu captions issue seems to be a Roku problem. Just worked with Hulu rep. Couldn’t get it resolved. 

    Doesn’t happen when I watch on my phone. Just on TV.

      Roku, when are you going to give us any kind of update on this?? It’s been 8 days now since mine worked. That’s unacceptable. People need captions to watch tv if they have trouble hearing. Do you understand that? 8 days with no solution is terrible but without so much as a “we’re working on it, so sorry it’s taking so long” from Roku is ridiculous

    I have also been having the issue the last few days. I don't have time to fill out everything above but it is from a Roku TV.  It happens with everything old or new content on Hulu (but not other streaming services).  Once I start watching a TV show it is fine (Grey's Anatomy) but after commerical it is out of synch.  When watching a movie it is out of sync from beginning bc the CC start during the credits at beginning.  When try on other devices the same shows/movies from Hulu work fine.

    This has been going on for over a week now.  It’s definitely a ROKU problem.   The CC works fine if I watch on  a different device.   When will it be fixed???
