Randomly dropped Wi-Fi, won’t connect

My Roku was connecter to my Wi-Fi already and worked perfectly fine as of this afternoon.

It randomly disconnected from my Wi-Fi and will not recognize the connection no matter how many times I try to connect it again. On the “choose your network” menu, it says my Wi-Fi signal strength is excellent

These are the following troubleshooting steps I’ve tried up until now

•Reset router and Roku player (5+ times)

• unplugged and plugged router and roku player

• hard reset roku player

•hard reset router

•factory reset roku player

I’ve tried to connect a hotspot to the Roku, however it will not find my hotspot. I’ve tried this on two different devices.

My phone and laptop are connected to my Wi-Fi with absolutely no issues.

I have a Roku Express HD that was purchased in November of 2020.

Re: Randomly dropped Wi-Fi, won’t connect

Hi @Sullivanj1

Thank you for the post.

If your Roku device is unable to connect to your Wi-Fi network despite multiple troubleshooting steps, there are a few additional things you can try:

  • Check for network interference: Sometimes, other electronic devices in your home can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, making it difficult for your Roku device to connect. Try moving your Roku device to a different location or away from other electronics to see if that improves the connection.
  • Check your router settings: Make sure that your router's security settings are compatible with your Roku device. Some routers may have settings such as MAC filtering or WPA/WPA2 encryption that can prevent your Roku from connecting.
  • Check for firmware updates: Make sure that your router is running the latest firmware version. You can check for updates in the router's settings menu or by contacting your internet service provider.
  • Try a different Wi-Fi network: If possible, try connecting your Roku device to a different Wi-Fi network to see if the issue persists. If it does not, the issue may be with your original network.

We hope it helps!

Warm regards,
Lianna

Re: Randomly dropped Wi-Fi, won’t connect

Your Express HD only receives the 2.4 GHz wifi band.

Your problem may have been caused by an update to your router which affects some Roku models.  Affected users report the Roku identifies the local network as available and rates the connection quality, but will not then connect to the internet.

If you receive this update it changes the router's wifi connection parameters for the 2.4 GHz wifi band from b/g/n to g/n. This has been reported for routers supplied by Comcast/xFinity, Cox, and AT&T, but there may be others.

The fix is to switch the router configuration protocols from the g/n wifi set by the update back to b/g/n. If you don't have access to your router's configuration controls you may have to have your internet provider do it for you.

Thanks to forum user @AvsGunnar for providing the links below to instructions for reconfiguring router settings for the listed internet suppliers. If you can't do this yourself, you may need to contact your internet provider to make these changes for you:
