Can't connect my TV to wifi, no remote and no information on TV's previous wifi

Jump to solution

I bought a TCL Roku TV from a garage sale because it was pretty cheap. Nobody knew where the remote was so I just got it and went home. The only thing I do have is a power cord for it. I turned the TV on and got the Roku home page but there is no way of doing anything past that. The button on the TV brings up a menu that you can navigate with the volume buttons, but there is no settings in the menu or anything related to connectivity. It can't connect to the wifi, so I can't connect my phone to it, and I'm not sure if I can connect a new remote to it either. I have no clue what the previous wifi was for the TV, and there is no ethernet port. What do I need to do to get this thing working? Is there no solution for my problem?

@BoogerTwo

You will need to get a physical Roku remote for it so you you can setup/activate the RokuTV.

The easiest option is to get a Roku Voice Remote from Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Walgreens, etc.  You could also order one from Roku, but they are the same price in stores. (about $20)

You could also use a universal streaming remote compatible with RokuTVs (which are different from Roku streaming players), that function via IR(infra-red).  These run about $10-20.

Could also purchase a RokuTV remote from Roku which will work across the different brands of RokuTV. These are also IR-based and run about $10.

Basically, any of the remotes listed on the Roku Remotes/Accessories page will work for your RokuTV, except for the "Players Remote". (this is for streaming players only).  https://www.roku.com/products/accessories  As mentioned, the Voice Remote can be readily found in stores while the Voice Remote Pro (rechargeable) may be a bit difficult to find other than online. (I have seen them in my Walmart and Best Buy though).

So before I go out and buy it, are you sure that it will connect to the TV if the TV has no connection to wifi/internet? I mean literally the only thing I have for the TV is a power cord.

@BoogerTwo, assuming there's nothing wrong with the TV, any of the remotes suggested by @AvsGunnar will certainly get it connected.  That menu you get with the power button doesn't really give you any kind of set up ability.  The cheapest remote doesn't require any kind of pairing - you just point it at the TV.  The voice remotes require pairing, so the Wi-Fi hardware within the TV must be working, but the TV itself doesn't have to be already connected to your Wi-Fi.  You can also use any universal remote that supports Roku TVs.  I'd probably go with the cheapest option to make sure the Wi-Fi hardware is working before I invested more in a voice remote.

You'll want to factory reset the TV to link it to your Roku account if it hasn't already been done.
