Trouble Setting Up Roku Remote Without a Pairing Button

I have exactly the same issue with my newly bought streaming stick 4k and voice remote (without a pairing button). I tried everything in the troubleshooting guide, but no luck so far. Anything I can do further?

  • Hey everyone,

If you’re here trying to set up a Roku remote that doesn’t have a pairing button. Here’s a quick guide to get you up and running:

    First, check your remote:
Look for a pairing button inside the battery compartment. No button? Cool — just follow the steps below.

    Pair using the Roku Menu:

    1. Press the Home button on your working remote or use the Roku mobile app.
    2. Go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices.
    3. Select Remote, then hit Continue.
    4. Follow the steps on the screen to pair your voice remote.

Restart your Roku device (if needed):

    1. Unplug your Roku from power.
    2. Wait 5 seconds.
    3. Plug it back in.
    4. When the Home screen shows up, go ahead and follow the steps above to pair your remote.

Put your remote in pairing mode:

    • No pairing button? Press and hold the Back and Home buttons together for 5 seconds — watch for the status light to start flashing.
    • Got a pairing button? Just press and hold that for 5 seconds instead.

If none of that does the trick, check out our full support article on Roku remote issues or search the Community for similar posts.

Good luck — and happy streaming!

    Hi, Jonlee

It's our pleasure to welcome you here in the Roku Community.

We appreciate you for sharing this information with us, and we're sorry to hear that you're having trouble pairing your Roku remote to your device. Rest assured that we'd be more than glad to assist. For this matter, we recommend re-pairing your remote to see if it's able to pair.

Re-pair your voice remote to your streaming device

Put your streaming device in pairing mode:

    1. Remove the power cable from your streaming device
    2. Wait at least 5 seconds
    3. Re-connect the power cable
    4. Wait for your streaming device to power on, and the Home screen to appear on your TV screen
    5. Within 30 seconds of seeing the Home screen on your TV screen, put your voice remote into pairing mode

Put your voice remote in pairing mode:

    1. Remove the battery cover on the back of your voice remote
    2. Remove both batteries from the battery compartment
    3. Wait 5 seconds and then reinsert the batteries
    4. If your remote has a pairing button, press and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds, or until you see the status light begin to flash.
    5. If your remote does not have a pairing button, press and hold both the Home button and Back button for 5 seconds, or until you see the status light begin to flash.
    6. If the status light does not flash, try replacing the batteries.
    7. Wait for 30 seconds while the remote establishes a connection with your streaming device.

Once your streaming device and remote are connected, the pairing dialog will appear on your TV screen. If you're unable to pair your remote, we recommend changing the batteries and once more.

    Keep us posted.

    Best wishes,
    Kash

It never gets past the Pair Your Remote screen with the 3 pictures of 5he remote. Yes, the Remote has the flashing green light. I have had a dozen Rokus and never had this problem with the models that have the pairing button.  This is a useless device.

Thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, jspearce2003!

We appreciate you letting us know about the issues you've encountered with pairing your physical Roku remote to your Roku Streaming Stick 4K device. We'd be happy to help.

May we first know what model the TV your Roku device is plugged into? Is this the first time you've activated a device on this TV? If so, we highly recommend plugging it into a different HDMI port to see if this makes any difference.

In addition, we also recommend trying it on a different TV  to see if this works.

        Keep us updated!

        Best regards,
        Carly

Exact same issue. It's my second Roku device, but this one won't work no matter where I plug it in.

I'm having the same problem.  I've done every suggestion. The light blinks but never pairs bc the set up screen never changes from the pair remote directions during initial set up. This is ridiculous.

I had the same problem and stumbled onto the solution. Hold down the reset button on the Roku stick itself will plugging it into power. Keep holding it down - it will boot up but then go into a pairing mode where it actually sees the remote.

Note that none of the "solutions" posted by Roku employees work for this problem. They just flood the message boards with things that don't work and then other messages that say, "that didn't work" which makes it hard to find the handful of posts that mention the actual solution. Good luck!
