Hello,
I have used roku for several years now. Today I inserted a usb drive and got this prompt.
"Allow access to external media the external media
you have connected can be read by channels installed on your Roku device please choose to allow or not allow access by installed channels below to reset the settings please reconnect the external media allow do not allow"
If you allow it to be read, a movie will play for about 15 seconds then the screen goes black.
So I pulled the usb out, stuck it back in and got this message when you try to play a video.
"Connecting to a DLNA media server or USB device to play or view content from a network media server 1st make sure that your media server is online to play your view content to play or view content from a USB storage device connect your device to the USB port on your Roku player drive format supported FAAT16/32NTFS, ..."
I was not trying to connect to a DLNA Media server, just use the USB drive,
I have never had this issue before, I uninstalled my Roku Media player and reinstalled it.
So I have tried it with other drives and and getting the same results.
Please help, Has anyone run into this before?
Will reformatting the roku fix this?
What's the software version displayed under Settings->System->About? I wonder if this is something new with v12.5. Unfortunately, I don't have a player with a USB port that's updated to 12.5 to test that theory.
Hello, You're not alone with this problem!
Having the EXACT same issue on my Roku Ultra Model 4670X OS ver. 12.5.0 build 4167-46
I have 3 Roku Ultras 1 has the new 12.5 OS installed that one has the playback issue.
The other 2 have 12.0 OS and work perfectly.
So the problem apparently is with the new 12.5 firmware/OS update!
I also did a factory reset and went through setting it up again and the problem was still there.
NEED HELP PLEASE!!
Hello, thanks for helping.
My problem is on the Roku Ultra Model 4670X OS ver. 12.5.0 build 4167-46.
I am sorry you are having the same issues. But I was thinking I was the only one. Hopefully ,they will change this. I use the roku media player all of the time.
I was going to do a factory reset. So you saved me a major headache for now.
I hope they fix this.

We need some help here!
Done some research here and it seems to me it might be .MP4 problem, they all crash after 10-15 sec's but I tried a dozen or so .MKV files and they played well past that time span for me, I haven't tested for a longer period which I'm going to do right now! Will update later.
Some more people testing that suggestion may help all of us facing this issue.
Failure. Oddly it ran for 20mins before crashing, MP4 crash almost immediately.
Sorry.
"it seems to me it might be .MP4 problem"
Almost all of my files are MP4.
It has worked for all of the time.
I watched entire films and concerts in MP4.
Now it seems that it conks out , I have some MP4s it will play for example, for some reason a copy of a Stones Concert played all the way through, it was on MP4.
It seems as if it is some sort of "protection" thing.

@gardo you get the ""Connecting to a DLNA media server or USB device to play or view content from a network media server 1st make sure that your media server is online ..." if you do not allow approval of other apps on roku?
Same problem. I love my roku for two reasons: the media player and YouTube tv. If this bug isn’t fixed soon, it may be time to use my chrome cast for YouTube tv and its media player.
Yes exactly. It is an important function, sorry you are going through this.
