ROKU Express Quick Restart

Jump to solution

ROKU needs to add a way to quickly restart the device. It doesn't need to be a full restart, just a way to close the apps in clear memory. I have to restart my Roku express fairly regularly because it becomes unresponsive or apps stop responding. Sometimes it even restart itself.

A System Restart is really the only way to clear the cache of these devices due to the memory hardware used.

If you are currently using your TV's USB power port, try plugging into the wall outlet using a USB power adapter and see if that helps. (any cell phone charging adapter 5volt, 1amp should work).  Underpowered devices can experience the above restarting and freezing issues you described.

Some of the channels/apps available on Roku are just resource hogs.  Often times these channels/apps may just work better on a faster device. (None of these should be freezing/crashing your devices though.)

OS 12.5 which is releasing now is going to be doing some memory optimizations for developers and pre-buffering on live streams so this may help in the future for the operation of some of these issues, but it may also cause some problems until fully worked out. (users with 12.5 are already reporting issues with their channels/apps being very slow, but a reported patch is supposedly on the way to address this).
