I’m told the “Channel Store is no longer supported on this device.” I have a Roku XD. Do I really need to upgrade or is there a way around this? Suggestions?

The Roku XD is a much older device that is no longer supported. However, we would be happy to see what we can do to help get you back up and running.

That's definitely on their list of legacy models that are no longer updated. From 2010 according to Wikipedia.
As for workarounds, I guess, continuing to run whatever channels still work?
